So I have picked up a full length m305 a while back. Love it, shoots great with the new rod. Comes to the range with me every trip.

Im wondering, I only shoot 500 yards and under with it (Iron sights) if the shorty is what I should have gone with ? Seems way more compact and easier to maneuver.

Pricing to chop barrel from a smith ? Roughly ? Worth it ?

no, considering the shorter barrel is readily available and you'd spend at least that getting a smith to chop and re-crown- remember you're only losing maybe 300 fps if that over 4 inches, plus the maneuverability isn't all that over a full length-I've got 4 22 inch standards, and there's other ways and means to achieve this- and doing 500 yards with a 308 is a job for a well- practised shot anyway- not a weekend hunter- dig out your ballistics tables and see how much drop a 200 yard zero gives you at 500- it's better than a yard- I don't use a 308 beyond 300 yards and prefer 250- and that's any 308- that ain't no f class rifle

Im not looking for precision shooting here. Im definitely not a weekend hunter, shoot twice a week... Usually 100 rounds of 308 a week spent. I use my bolt guns in 308 out to 800 yards, 300 win mag for farther.

2 ft square 300 yard gongs on call with this rifle no issues using irons.

Its seems like your answer is just go buy another ;) because chopping and work will be more or even to $600

I preferred that answer anyways ! lol

I believe it is around 100 bucks at dlask arms. They do not need to pull the barrel. they have done at least a couple hundred of them for me over the years.
I prefer the 18.5 to 19" barrel and find it to have better accuracy than the 22" , possibly because of slightly less barrel whip being shorter and a more compact flash hider.
500 yards is easily done considering the amount of shooting yer doing.
My keeper m14 type rifle sports an 18.5" krieger medium pipe and I love it ;) (but that is some big dollars LOL)

Yea not looking to spend big on a just for fun gong ringer. Ill have to give them a shout, as well as the local smith. Thanks for the heads up !

Trust this job to dlask, they have a special jig for the lathe that enables the job to be done accurately without pulling the barrel.

I've competed for all my years using a 22" barrel. :) I've grown used to that longer length. BUT (big but) when the Norcs came out in 18.5" shorty versions, I fell in love with them. Yeah, one gives up a bit of velocity, but truth be told, for a deer/zombie/bear/moose/zombie/ quad/ATV/Polaris/ Yamaha/ Honda/ Arctic Kitty/ insert purpose here rig, then the shorty is hard to beat.

Right now my keeper 2007 Norinco receiver sports a 22" Criterion barrel and I'm loving that PING sound!

Buy what works for you and your game/budget/gun case/ gun safe/ gun cabinet/ comfort level/ LCV (looks cool value)/ and EGO!

All I know is that these rigs are addictive and there's just no letting up!

Cheers:

if your shooting iron sights to 500 yds, I believe the longer sight radius of the 22" is an advantage,,,

A friend has a shorty and I find it louder,,which is important to me,,

I'm a tradesman and trying to keep the hearing that I have left,,lol,,just my 2c

I had a 22 inch barrel that I chopped because the front sight and FH were almost sideways. Don't believe any promises of warranty. Dlask did it for around $100 or so and it was so much fun that I bought another and chopped it too.

The only problem I have is that the front sight post is just slightly too high. My choice is to raise the rear sight a half dozen clicks or take a file to the front blade.

Yea, for the trouble its almost worth just buying a shortie. I have my 22 dialed in set up just how I like it. Stock is right, trigger job is crisp, AFG up front, and groups are consistent. Don't think I want to mess with it to much.

I've now had 4 m305's over my owner ship of the platform and they are such a fun rifle to shoot! One option is to just pick up a 18.5 inch barrel used/like new and try it out on your receiver. If you haven't yet I highly recommend that you look in to taking one of the m14/m305 clinics with TacticalTeacher, you will walk away with a lot of knowledge and if you do pick up a shorter barrel you can do the barrel swap your self.

My current keeper wore a 18.5 barrel for a while and it was a blast. I didn't notice a big difference in accuracy but it did require me to do some work with my irons do to the shorter distance between the front and rear. In the end I decided to put a USGI barrel on and put it back to 22". I just can't get over how much I love the classic look of the M14.

Swapping barrels is totally doable. But if your considering a second gun.. Just go buy one already, and come to a clinic!
