hey fellow shooters, I'm looking into buying an M305 but not sure what direction to go with either the shorty or long. Does it matter for many of the after market stocks, the functionality, precisian?... Im not going for great accuracy but more for a kick@$$ modern battle gun...whats your options

I don't think there will be much difference for what your looking for. I would suggest getting the shorty as there easier to freehand.

I have both. I find the 18.5 with an AR style muzzle brake much easier to swing around/ move through the woods. If your idea is "modern ish" then get a shorty.
I really like my full length as well, but I use them for 2 different things.

My 18.5 stands nearly exactly the same length as my sks and some consider the sks long lol so id imagine a 20 or 22" barrel is getting a bit on the long side of things.

Your loosing some fps with the shorter barrel, but I doubt it will be super noticeable or much of a loss really.

22" = old school
18.5" = modern version

My bench/target version is a 22" DMR (LRB M25, krieger DMR stainless)
My modernized,shtf,zombie(or I.S.) invasion/hunting/quad/fun gun is a 18.5"

If it's a pro's and con's thing...
The 18.5" barrel has less barrel hanging past the gas system so in theory would have less whip. This is handy for rapid fire as the barrel heats up.
A con of an 18.5" would be that effective range may suffer (vs 22") due to velocity loss past 600 yards.

Ya... You really do need "at least" one of each

Because of the the standard thin/light barrel profile of the 305 in both 22" & 18.5" - I really do believe the 18.5 & 22" are equals.

RE:pros/cons

IE.

22" = higher muzzle velocity = more hitpower @ longer range & possibly = more kills @ longer range.

18.5" = lighter faster pointing & possibly more hits = possibly more kills @ shorter range.

so with the info i have gathered from all of who has posted back..under careful consideration i do agree that i am going to need both, but ill start with the short first with a Troy SOPMOD stock then turn to pick up the long and add the JAE-100 to it...any objections?

Only thing I can add is that it is a pita trying to find a muzzle brake for the metric Norc threads on my factory shorty. And it has ugly splines that I don't use as well. My next one will be a long one that I have shortened and properly threaded. Given the factory barrel indexing issues and the quite commonly canted front sight mount (from casting/machining issues) don't just assume that the factory one will be ok.
Strangely, a shortened 22" will look more factory than my factory 18.5".

Some guys at my weekend M14 clinic had barrels that were threaded by Dlask Arms. They were able to put what looked like a 1/2x28 threading at the muzzle without cutting off the factory muzzle end flash hider mounting detail... Nifty and a procedure I haven't seen done before.
Might be a perfect solution for you?

They offer reasonable rates on their website. It's the route I am going with my SHM, loudener, brake.

I bought my full-size strictly because I wanted to shoot it irons only, and it has the better radius obviously. But I do want to put a shorty together to use with a 1-4x scope or an Aimpoint or something
