You have to consider the ammo also. 7.62 nato is going to be more accurate then 7.62x39, especially at longer ranges. cant beat the price of 7.62x39 tho.

spend 30 bucks and to get a NM spring guide, 100 to get a good stock and your STILL under the price for a new 858.

Depends on the rifle, some people get really lucky and don't have to do much for that extra bit of precission. Some people have to spend an extra $100-200 bucks. Depends on the rifle, and what you intend to shoot out of it.

Do the SAW grips need to be modified at all to fit?

They bolt right in...... but you can file down the front sides of the grip for a better fit.
