wondering if anyone can tell me as i am new to the m14 platform what The adjustable gas lock that Dlask sells is used for is used instead of shimming the gas block?

Yep, that's pretty much it, and as a sight base if you aren't using the flash hider.

View attachment 13516Usually the original gas block does not lock down at the six o'clock position, even when reversed.
If you have access to a bunch of them, say, at an M14 clinic, everyone can swap gas blocks
and find one that is perfect for their rifle. Not everyone can get to a clinic, so the Dlask
gas lock is a perfect way to further accurize your rifle without shimming.
Here's mine with the S.A."Bush Rifle" front sight.

what is the proper torque for the gas system?

"hand tight" at the 4:00 position, needing a wrench to get it to the 6:00 position.
