After Christmas I am going to get my first black rifle. I have decided on a Stag based on all the reading I have done here and on the fact that I can support a local company, ArmsEast.

The question remains which version to get. The M4 version seems better suited to mods and add ons but I always liked the classic M-16 style. As well I still harbor the idea that the rifle will lose its restricted status and then it could be used for hunting coyotes. (I know, more fool me.)

I welcome all opinions.

Thanks

You'll end up getting both!

But if it was me I'd get an M4-gery since the accuracy is good, everything can be added on, adjustable stock and it is a lot cooler if that counts.

I guess the more practical answer is that it depends on your shooting. If you want a longer range rifle for more classic competitions, get the full sized AR, if you are going to be doing medium ranges and a lot of fast shooting get an M4-gery.

You also have the option of a 20" barrel with a carbine style stock and a FF railed foreend. There are a lot more pics of M4geries on the interweeb, but don't feel that you need to have yours looking like everyone else's.

What I'm trying to say is buy the type of AR that you want to shoot...and if you find that after the fact you want to shoot a different type as well, then go ahead and buy another upper (or another AR)

Oh...and since your waters aren't muddy enough:p

If you're torn between the two, you may want to consider a 16" barrel with a mid-length gas system. I have no personal experience with them, but apparently the longer gas tube and different gas port from the carbine style results in smoother, less violent cycling of the bolt carrier assembly.

And just like the other lengths, you can tweak them any way you want.

I know...we didn't help you at all :runaway:

It looks like (no surprise here) your decision to buy from ArmsEast has just been validated. I'd say take them up on the offer...there's nothing that will substitute for firing the different candidates in terms of making up your mind.

Why the M4gery title? The name or designation M4 originated with Colt. A recent ruling has been made that the name M4 is no longer something that only Colt can use and that the name M4 does not necessarily refer to a Colt product. If it has a 14.5" barrel with an adjustable stock, its an M4..

As for which to get. Its your choice. I have a 14.5" and a 16" mid length. I love them both. The 16" will yield 93% the performance of a 20" barrel and its only 1.5 inches longer than a traditional M4 and its 4 inches shorter than a 20" full size. It also has a much reduced gas impulse and results in a smoother running rifle. Determine your goal or purpose for the rifle and work from there.

I have the 20 inch LH Stag and plan on doing longer range competitions.....so, getting to the point, get what you will use more... keeping in mind it will still be a range baby for now:)

Proof that 20 inches can be as cool as the shorter cousins.

My next purchase will be a 16 inch LH Stag though.
Basically you cannot go wrong with either, and the idea of getting one lower and two uppers is a good one, depending on your funds of course, who needs food and shelter anyway;)

Don't M4s have the Happy switch??? and M4gerys don't,right???

and they all have safeties so technically were two thirds of the way there:D

I fully agree. With the exception of roll marks and the third setting, everything else is the same. In all honesty, I don't see the point to calling it an M4gery. At first glance everyone sees an "M4" regardless of who made it or whether or not its full auto. Just seems kind of stupid..

Besides which, the M4 and the M16 (in all their various versions) each conform to a specific set of specs. A C7 has a happy switch, but it's not an M16.

Sure, these points are fairly fine, but the difference is there. Kind of like the difference between 5.56mm and .223 Remington. Except that instead of a potential KB, th difference is a potential prison term :runaway:

W squared,

I understand there are some minor detail differences. These differences go unnoticed unless one specifically looks for them. Often having to have the rifle to notice such differences. I'm basing my titles of the function of the firearm. A 20" barreled AR with a fixed stock operates the same as a true M16. So in my eyes they're the same beast.

On a side note. There is almost no risk when firing 5.56 through a .223 chambered gun. Same goes for 7.62 and .308.
