HI guys, I'm thinking about making up a M40 clone and want to use a Gaillard tube, just trying to figure out which contour to use...
Seems a #6 will give me a heavier then spec barrel and a Light Target will come out finished lighter then spec.
Just wondering if anyone has done this yet before me, thanks

Ya, I know what contour I'm trying to match, but I'm trying to figure out which Gaillard contour will finish closest to the original M40's. A rock creek M40 contour is 1.2 at the reciever for 4", then straight taper to finish at .900. Seems to me that the Gaillards will finish slightly over that size or slightly under. so just trying to get a feeling for what others might have done in the past.

Possibly a little more info than you wanted, but here you go ;>)

M40A1 Barrel profile:

There have been several barrels throughout the course of the M40a1 in varying lengths. The dimensions are as follows: 1.2" for 4" then tapering to .91-.92" at the muzzle. These barrels were 6 groove, 1/12" twist, stainless steel and finished with a counter-bore crown. Hart, Schneider, Atkinson/H&S Precision all supplied barrels at one time. The lengths vary from 26" to 24" measured from the front face of the recoil lug.

According to Gary Schneider of Schneider barrels the M40A1 barrel dimensions were 1.10-1.210 +/- X4", straight tapering to .890-.910 +/- @ 26.5".

After cutting and threading the breach end you would end up with 1.20" X3", +/-.
Once it was threaded at the breech end they the USMC armorers would trim the muzzle of the barrel to 24" from the front of the trued recoil lug, as is their method of measurement, making the muzzle approximately .920-.940, again +/- . ;\)
He stated there were variations of +/-.015", maybe more at times.

He also said the barrels had a rough turned finish when supplied to the Marines Corps initially as they were rushed to meet the deadline. He said he offered to make them smoother on production models if accepted(which he was), but the Marines liked the rough finish as they said it held paint real well, so he made all the rest of the contract the same way.

As for the curious 1.20X3" finished breech end measurement ,he says that was strictly to facilitate the use of the night vision equipment they had/have. Any longer or thicker in the breech end would cause interference with the objective, or other parts of the NV equipment. So it wasn't just some outdated military quirk. Most factory or replacement rifle barrels usually have measurements of 1.25"X 4-5" X whatever length.

BTW, I am assuming you are talking M40A1, and not the Vietnam era M40, which was a Remington factory Varmint contour barrel. Actually, that barrel profile became what Remington now uses on PSS and Varmint models.

I had Ted contour a barrel to the above specs (straight taper to .920" @ 26") years ago, and its on my M86 clone. I'm having an M40A1 clone built now and I used a benchrest Heavy Varmint contour for that as its fairly close.

I'll try to post some pics of my clone when it finished. PM me if you need any M40A1/A3/M24 clone information.

For a fee ted will contour your barrel how ever you want so you don't have to compromise between the real m24 contour and the ones he lists.

Well, ended up grabing that Krieger varmint barrel off the EE, price was fair and don't have to wait 8 weeks for the barrel to be made. It's a light varmint, so my muzzle is going to be around .810 but that's fine with me. I'm not trying to make an exact reproduction, just something close to the M40. I'm sure if I put it side by side with a good clone I'd see the difference, but I'm sure this pipe will work well. Thanks for the replys, I'll post a pic or 2 when it's up and running.
