That will not work as the short model 70 has a different screw spacing than a short 700

You need a two piece set (available from Midwest as well) and then shorten the floor plate.

^^^ This

Also you might need a M70 long floor-plate to have enough length to trim off the tapered section-I’m not sure what the unaltered length is on a M70 short action floor-plate section.

You will also need a 6-32NC screw for the front of the modified trigger guard. I have a drawing of the escutcheon for the screw if you need that. And if you aren’t familiar you will also have to enlarge the trigger opening in the trigger guard and notch the lower corner of the Rem 700 trigger housing to fit.

I believe the 6-32 screw is the same as what is used in a household electrical outlet cover-although a black, Allen head one is preferred vs the usual slot head screw from an outlet cover.

If you’re going to attempt an actual ‘clone’ build have your patience and wallet ready!
Legit parts are difficult to find and are very expensive....if a ‘look alike’ will satisfy you have a look on the M40 thread...a fresh ATRS build that looks the part, will shoot awesome, no guilt in some better features such as a bipod stud, HTG texturing, BDL inlet, and optics of your choice.

What Colquhoun said is very true......I have a problem and OCD is a cruel mistress...it takes a lot of fitting and bedding to chop up a steel M70 floor-plate and you end up with a 1975 era solution to the requirement to have a steel t/g as specified by the USMC at the time.

My first “clone” used a one piece Williams part made to put a M70 style t/g in a 700 short action screw spacing, but the spec part pictured above is a bit of a pain in the neck and results in something less than secure.....but is closer to what was used by PWS. There are photos out there of A1’s in the field with 200 mph tape over the floor plate to keep it from popping open which should say something.

Unfortunately Williams doesn’t make the one I used on the last rifle anymore, it was pretty much a drop in part except for a little minor inlet of the stock required.

If you go with the pain in the neck option PM me and I can send you better photos and measurements needed to modify the M70 parts.

I can appreciate the true-to-original spec build, I like the details too. But I opted for the lookalike with mine, mostly because I knew no matter what I did, it would still be a replica. No guilt here, its a great rifle and it has a couple things changed that I figured would suit me. Skipping a few of the details also put it in my hands for less money, in less time. I'm good with that. But all due respect to those who go the extra mile....
