m44 carbine, how good is it at 100 yards

If the rifle is in decent condition, doesn't have an oversize bore, decent ammunition and how good your eyes are, it should shoot very well. They also kick like a mule. If you're recoil sensitive, it may cause you to develop a flinch.

best shooter i ever had was a m44 tradex refurb. 3 inch groups 100 meters 180 grain .310 sierra flatbase spitzer.46.5 grains varget.very accurate recoil very noticeable

That MN sight is a lot easier to acquire under low light or exciting conditions than a mauser sight. They both still retained a very hard to acquire tangent rear sight. The Japanese got it right with the ghost ring tangent sight on their type 99 rifles. I also think the hooded front sight helped a great deal in acquiring low light targets. I've found that placing the hood over the rear tangent sight and keeping both eyes open allowed for a very high percentage of hits right out to 100 m during low light conditions.

With old Czech silvertip surplus ammo I was able to shoot about 3" group at 100yds, it shoots low though, about 16MOA off point of aim. BTW a Limbsaver makes all the difference for shooting the M44, First time without it and I was starting to flinch bad after 15-20 rounds and with it on, i was able to shoot 100rnds and not really notice anything, other than the massive BANG....

This was also with the bayo out, I havent shot with it in yet I so can't comment on that.
I would really like to try some handloads but I'm still aways from that yet..

I wonder how the M44 will kick with Hungarian "heavy ball" when I try her out next month .... I do know it kicks like a proverbial mule at the best of times.

The heavy ball kicks pretty good in my carbines.

Hold it properly and, as Chopper Reid would say, "harden the #### up!":D

When I was a young svelte lad we went shooting to an abandoned mine. Lots of hard targets that day. I cracked off 400rds with my Polish M44. Wow, did I ever have a sore bruised shoulder for the next week. That was when Century Arms was selling ammo at $110/1000rds.

Anyways, with a slip on rubber buttpad the recoil can be softened nicely. I use that on the rifle, and also I find the 1" longer pull more comfortable. Very accurate rifles. They were a bargain back in the late 80's for $99 new.

they shoot quite well (from what i can tell, a lot of it is dependent on skill of course), plenty good enough for deer. i did have to set the sights at 300 to get the 180 S&B ammo dead on at 100.

recoil isn't bad.

btw, the 7.62x54R's ballistics are closer to the 30-06 than they are to the 308.
