I need to refinish this wood. Below is the crop of the stock damage. It photoshopped it out of the big picture, too painful to look :)

Use a Mosin sling......

She needs help for sure (thanks to less-than-perfect storage. Oh well, it is what it is....) but I'm gonna be you just might be the owner to restore her to her former glory!!!!

The mismatched colour of the handguard wood is more of an eyesore than the scratch IMO.

Attach a slip on buttpad and cartridge holder like me if you are so irked by it. I shoot mine though, so looks aren't a main priority as its main purpose is not a collector piece. So those things act as function just as much as form.

Looks like you have shallac missing and maybe a little wood. Touch it up or refinish the whole thing, getting the UHG to match (most likely thrown on from a different rifle).

Strip, sand and refinish. That stock has some nice wood grain, it will come out great if you are willing to put the effort into it.

I also notice it's a hardwood stock that has had a crossbolt installed through the grip.
Arsenal may have seen or anticipated a problem in that area so reinforced it.

There are some rather good YouTube videos on the refinishing process. If the OP is just going to use it as a frequent shooter, just throw some shallac on it and don't worry about it. If he wants something really nice, refinish.

Looks great! Refinished my M44 last year as it came with a BLO finish which I simply could not tolerate. Was a fun little project and very rewarding. Thinking to refinish my Chicom SKS but with a genuine shellac finish using the French polish technique. Also could touch up some of the other red rifles while I'm at it.
