So Im in the market for a hunting rifle for moose and deer come the fall, and Im not a huge fan of your traditional hunting rifle. I do love the old bolt actions though, and I think a M48 Mauser would do nicely. Ive found a few websites that have these for sale for a decent price, but Im a little hesitant to buy it online cause I dont want to get one thats in bad shape, mainly the bore.

I was wondering if anyone has had experience buying them online (nobody has them close to me so I cant go and look at them)

Good gun and a good caliber. Problem is finding good commercial ammo and the only way to fully appreciate 8mm is to hand load.

I'd look for a military Mauser chambered on 7x57, .308, and 30-06.

Corwin Arms usually have nice ones, and you can also ask him for one with a great bore, but I think all his M48 do!

I would be interested to see a M48 in bad shape. The vast majority of them never saw combat. The Yugoslavians started to build sks rifles in '59 to replace the m48. The m48s were put into storage and well maintained.

You can confidently buy from any cgn sponsor. The companies that sell questionable items are chased away by angry mobs. I purchased my m48 from SFRC and it arrived in much better condition than what I expected from a surplus rifle. It looked like it never been fired, though it probably had. Corwin arms has sold a lot, and I haven't seen any complaints about them. They have a few in stock, and are reasonably priced.

I took my m48 on a hunting trip. The weight combined with the thin sling made it uncomfortable to carry on long treks. A better sling would fix this. Didn't get to shoot at anything, but i'm sure 196gr bullets would drop a moose no problem. Commercial ammunition is expensive when you can find it, and is underwhelming.

I bought an M48 from corwin arms last year and got a wonderfully well preserved specimen. It came heavily coated in cosmoline. Once cleaned up it's a brand new rifle for all intents & purposes. They carry the nicest surplus yugos on the market for the best prices IMO.
