Ok I'm new to whole black rifle game. First one is in the mail to me as i type this. My question is why is the Norinco cq I just picked up refered to as a M4gery or a clone while other name brands arnt? :confused:

Please correct me if im wrong but as I understand it Colt designed the M4's and pattented the design so in theory wouldnt all M4's made in the last 15 years or so be clones or M4geries if they are not Colts? I read the patent is now up and anyone can make them at will so why the negative conotation about norinco and not other name brands?
 
M4 is the automatic carbine that is issued to the military, any semi auto civilian rifle even the one made by Colt (AR15 government carbine or AR15 Tactical carbine) as considered as M4gery.

i really wouldn't worry about it, just enjoy your new Norinco, some people just have a general hatred for anything that is not made by country that does not speak one of the Germanic languages.

The upper on my LE6920 is stamped M4... and if it ain't a Colt, it's a copy... :D Well, except for my Armalite that is... :nest:
 
I was under the impression that technically only the Colt model 920 was technically an M4. That was the model which the DoD selected and consequently was designated M4. All others are M4geries including the Colt 6920. I could be completely wrong on this though. It is interesting how generic the term is becoming though, the NZ AOS officers constantly refer to their semi-auto Bushmaster carbines as M4's

Personally I think people seem far to hung up on recreating the closest thing to what the military is currently using rather than getting the carbine/rifle that would suit them.

The only thing you could outshout them in would be volume. Reliability and accuracy are a different ball game.

A M4gery would be a 14.5 carbine length DI gas system built from various manufactuers. IE, LMT, DD, Noveske, ArmaLite, STAG ect ect.

So true, but it feels so lame to say this is my cq311, my m305s and my cz858-tac2 when everyone wants to say m16 , m14 and an Ak. Can't we pretend? (Just joking, I don't want a stinky old Ak, why russki when you can go czech?) Sadly enough, copies can make improvements, original designs live with the deficiencies.:p
 
You bought a semi-version/Civilian of the military designation or criteria of that particular time frame, that is it! There are dozens of company's that make that rifle, do a Google search and you can read all the history of that particular rifle and it variants, it is essentially the same thing. Some are made of higher quality standards others like your norinco look like a Diemaco C8 or Colt made in the early 90's or 80's. It will work fine, and you can upgrade it as you see fit with as many different manufactures accessories as you fancy it to have.

Good purchase and way to enter the restricted world without spending another 500 bones, now you can put it to ammo and other "bells & whistles" or whatever your hearts content.

More to your point... the 6920 is stock with a 16" bbl taking it even further away from the "true" M4 config. And ESQ's point about the group therapy switch is where the real difference is...
 
I'm not sure that colt has the complete single source monopoly for all time. I know that Sabre made some M16s for the US gov, so maybe other contractors have been used for M4s, too.

You're right. Colt initiated a lawsuit against Bushmaster for using the word M4 and lost. The courts ruled that M4 is not synonymous with Colt.
