I had my 700 7mm RM laying on my atv unloaded and action open. Imagine my surprise when I saw 270 WBY etched on the bottom of the bolt!
This was a gun show purchase and I have fired it to sight it in with no ill effects and brass showed no signs of damage.
What do you guys make of this?

Same bolt face, same parent cartridge. .270 Weatherby Magnum and 7mm Remington Magnum are based on the .375 H&H cartridge. It appears your 7mm RM was either built from spare parts or was a .270 WBY rebarreled to 7mm RM. Not a problem as long as it was done properly.

Does the bolt serial number match the rifle serial number?

This.
I have a couple of 700's and they have the last 3 numbers of the sereal, but not caliber electro penciled on the bolt.
If it was a factory barrel it would be clearly marked with caliber, manufacturer etc.

Great advice all. I pulled the bolt and looked carefully and sure enough the 4 digits machine etched into bolt match the last 4 of the rifle. 270 WBY shall remain a mystery. Thanks gunnutz.
P.S. factory marked 7mm RM.

It has likely been re-barrelled as a .270 Weatherby in a previous life. Guy's a tinkerer with several Remington's, likes to store rifles with bolts removed, doesn't realize it's aready matched to serial number. Has his fun, then pops the original barrel (or another take-off) back on to sell it. Probably the original if the barrel stampings index correctly. He realizes that he will do better selling it in a common caliber, which indicates that the .270 barrel was a rechambered take-off because he would have left a custom barrel on.

So we're looking for a white male, 35 to 65. Had a strict upbringing, likes Remingtons, magnum cases and playing with things.

I wonder what his board name is?
