I picked this thing up and tried it out this week. First results were average using 180gr WW Silvertips over IMR 3031 in Norma brass (6 different loads 39 - 41 grains tested)...

A few questions

- what effect does barrel length have on published data for pressure and velocity. Most data I have is for 22 -23 inch barrels.

- with the 1:12 barrel 26 inches long should I be looking at speed to stabilize and group or should I back off and see what happens?

- I picked up some Horandy Interlock 150gr BTSP today and I am going to try some Varget and 4895 loads so ideas for those are welcome as well.

If you absolute accuracy out of it, then get the Nosler Competition 168's or the Sierra Matchking 175's.

Use RL15 powder and preferably Federal 210M primers, but CCI BR2's are good to go.

I am not a good enough shot to seek what this rifle is probably capable of, I just want to get good consistent shooting. I adjusted the trigger from its previous pound it with a hammer setting, that will help, now I am going to work toward 5 shot groups around 1 - 1.5 MOA @ 100yds. I was getting 3 - 4 inch groups with the above loads.

Another thing was firing it off a bipod seemed to make it worse...

Thanks
Geoff

From my experiance with the the .308win powders H4895,IMR4064 & 4895 ,Varget got the best results with 168gr match bullets
I have never seen a bedded .308 1/12 twist with 168gr and light load of 39-40gr H4895 not shoot in the .5" of bags with a decent trigger

This seems to have worked for me in many different rem700's: 168 or 175 sierra, 43g varget, lapua brass, cci br2 primer, loaded to 2.955" (stock rem has a long throat). Too long for the internal mag, but groups sub-moa without a lot of effort.

Certaily agree about H4895.

My load was 41.4gr with the 168 and could produce bugholes all day long.

Well we went for a range trip this morning, 10 loads based on H4895 and hornady 150 BTSP, I used Federal primers vice WW this time and of course stuck with Norma brass. Everything was made to 2.775 in OAL.

Loads of 37 - 39.5 gr in 0.5 gr increases all showed respectable results, 2" @ 100 yds for 5 shots.

Loads of 40 and 40.5 gr tightened right up, 3 shots in .75" with the other 2 just outside and inch (I had to stop and reload after 3)

A load of 41gr spread out to about 1.25 inches but nothing was touching.

I also made up some loads @ 43gr and 45gr to see what happened at higher pressures. The group size was again consistent around 2 inches ---

I will next be loading up some stuff from 40 - 41 and messing with OAL.

Thanks to Doug for the use of his OUTERS Varmint rest - that was a big help.

You are likely right Maynard, but I am only doing this to have good accurate hunting loads. I am not sure match ammo would be appropriate for Ontario Whitetail :)

For me the fun is finding out what I can get it to do then move on...

I will likely be getting together with my gunsmith to bed the thing in the near future, that will likely help a bit more.

One thing I really like is the heavy barrel is the ability to fire several strings close together without the barrel over heating. I carried it for a bit coyote hunting and it was not to bad.

Thanks again for the advise.
