If price is a concern, consider finding a good deal on a used pistol and equipment. You also need to consider magazine costs as you should have at least four (possibly a few more if you can afford them), and mags for some pistols are quite expensive. Don't forget your belt, holster, magazine pouches and, most of all, ammunition. You need to kind of figure out how much your going to shoot in a year, figure out what you can afford, and then go backwards from there to see what the best bang for your buck is. Pistols that are very popular and common (like the M&P) will be easier to find used, as will holsters and such. Pistols that come in range kits can offer some good value in that they usually come with a Bladetech holster, but the mag pouches are usually doubles (limited adjustment) and you'd need additional mag pouches anyway (you may prefer singles that can offer more adjustment).
