M76 grenade launcher?

The picture shows the M31 Practise Grenade and the M15 sight mounted on the rifle. The M76 grenade launcher was design to use any standard 22 mm NATO grenade. There are number of grenade that can be launchered from the M14 with the M76. I also have a m76 for my M14 and I have launched M29, M31 and M118A1 practise grenades from it. Was even foolish enough to fire one from the shoulder. Grenade cartridges are hard to by also. I saw a package of 5 M64 grenade cartridges on Simpson Ltd. site for $20.00.

There is no seal between the Grenade Launcher and the flash suppressor. It just slide over the suppressor and there is a latch that secures it using the bayonet lug. I guess there is some gas leakage but it is insignificant. There is such a big hole and the grenade is loose enough that all the gas goes out the end. Do a search on Google for rifle grenade launcher. Also Bill Ricca has some information on M1 grenade launcher on his website.

You can either do direct fire or high angle fire with rifle grenades depending on the range and target. 150 meters is about the maxium range on either. Until my supply of both 7,62 mm NATO and .30-06 grenade cartridge statrted to run low I was able to put a M31 practise grenade through a door way at 150 meter 4 out of 5 times using a FN FAL, FN model 49, U. S. Rifle, caliber .30 M1 and a U.S. Rifle, 7,62 mm, M14. The C1A1 also had a grenade luancher attachment.

Can not speak to where in Canada you can obtain grenade launching attachment for various rifle or a source of practise grenades or grenade blanks. By the way to launch rifle grenades you NEED THE PROPER GRENADE LAUNCHING CARTRIDGES! Here in the States grenade launching attachment for the M1 are fairly common (M7 series). Some FAL have the combo flash suppressor/grenade launcher (both Beligan and Austrian version). Launchers for the M14 rifle and M1 Carbine can be found at a price. The BM59 has the Tri-Compensator. Even launchers for the No. 4 rifles are common although .303 blanks are hard to come by. Practise grenade in various models can be found with little difficulity. Grenade blanks are becoming hard to find. There is a company (Hi-Vel) that makes grenade blank but I am not sure if they meet military specifications. I go to a friends ranch to launch my grenades.

The military, at least the U. S. military, has not used rifle grenade since the early 1960's. They went to the 40 mm grenade launchers.

Yes, I've shot M31 training grenades using the rig shown in my photo above. It's lots of fun as long as you put the stock on the ground and not into your shoulder. ;)

The U. S. Army 82nd Airborne Division used the M76 launcher in Viet Nam in 1964 for firing rifle grenades. The U. S. Marines used the M14 and M76 to launch rifle grenades in Viet Nam as late as 1966. The M79 40 mm grenade launcher had pretty much replaced the M76 66 mm launcher by 1965.

Whatever happened to the bullet trap rifle grenades? I had read that the US was evaluating them a while back but never heard anything about it since. Those are the ones that you just put over the flash hider and fire a normal round, the bullet stops in the grenade and launches it.
