Does anybody know if the Ruger M77 tang safety and MKII extractors are interchangeable?

Or does anybody have a spare M77 tang safety long action extractor suitable for 7x57 ?

Sometimes my extractor fails to extract the brass. It looks perfect, but I suspect there's not enough tension (the spring is "sprung")

Different. Mk I is push-feed as that big extractor snaps over the rim once it rotates going into chamber. The Mk II are true CRF and the boltface/extractor are milled different to allow the cartridge rim to slide under the extractor as it rises from the mag. Havent seen a bolt or extraxtor for sale in a long time. Try a WTB ad in the EE. Maybe someone will have one sitting in a container on the bench.

Unless it is a GSR scout or any of the newer AI mag fed Hawkeyes…you travel back in time 35 years and end up with a MK I push feed all over again! :p

And to further complicate matters, there were early m77-markII’s that were not CRF.
Here is a pic I found online

WGP people don't want to help their customers with such issues and insist you do their work for them.

Just order a new one from Numrich Gun Parts and it will be here in a few weeks.

Too bad things have changed there, I have bought parts from them in the past that were unobtanium in Canada...yes they were prickly over the phone but they could speak the language and almost always got things done.

It's all ok. Michael from Snapshots in Quebec suggested that I add a slight "bow" to the extractor, and sure as shoot'in, nice positive extraction was restored. I think, after 30 years, the extractor just needed a bit of tweaking. Apparently, this is an old technique/trick used for Mauser M98/K98's.

But this experience has convinced me to buy a decent parts rifle as Ruger is sadly no longer supporting the tang safety models, and parts are virtually unobtainable.

Thanks my good man. However, I don't think Numrich has them in stock any more. I don't believe the MKII variant fits?

I went through my parts. The Ruger extractor is mounted on the bolt by engaging a collar which wraps around the bolt in a grove - typical Mauser installation. It appears that the groove and collar are further back from the bolt head on a Mk. II, compared with the earlier tang safety model. Had a look at a long action early version and compared its extractor with the Mk. II version. There is no way that the Mk. II would work on the tang safety bolt.
The very first M77 extractor was based on the M1917. When the rifle went into production, there was a problem getting production of the cast extractors up and running. Ruger bought up M1917 extractors and used them. Maybe a M1917 extractor could be fitted to the OP's rifle.

This is why I love this forum! Thank you Tiriaq. I will order an Enfield 1917 extractor from Numrich. Fingers crossed as there is no shortage of M1917 extractors to be found. And thank you Jim Sullivan for a smart design!

Didn't the M1917/P1914 action became the Remington 700 action ??
