Question - will the cleaning rod and jag on my M91/30 mess up my bore if used too much? they both are made of uncoated metal. Im worried that even with the bore guide, it would mess up the crown and/or rifling - so far Im just using a coated rod, patches, etc.

Cheers

Definitely stick with a rod and patches over the stock rod. The best thing I've ever found for use is a bore snake, one pull is equivalent to some exorbitant amount of patches that I can't remember off-hand.

The cleaning kits work. However they are typically hard on your bore, especially if used incorrectly. Your best bet is to stick with a good solvent (I use Hoppes) with a commerical cleaning kit and a bunch of patches. A few passes with a bore brush to break out cosmoline helps too.

Its not so much that the bore will be damaged as much as the crown. I made a muzzle protector similar to the one designed for the SKS. The cleaning kits work, but the technology is 100 years old and designed for use by peasant draftees. I'm not fond of jags even though they work for a quick clean or lube job. A good brush is much more effective once at home with proper cleaning utensils.

Use foam bore cleaner and let the foam do all the work.

Do you see a bore brush anywhere near this tank?

Just don't do it - keep using your one piece rod with a modern brush/jag. Deweys are good. Get one long enough to clean from the bore to the muzzle.

If you use the bore guide that come in the tool kit, you wont mess the crown or the bore. That tool kit is all i ever used to clean my mosin. Of course nothing worng using a commercial kit or a bore snake but i like using the tool that military rifle came with:) even if i'm not on the eastern front:p
