So I have a beautiful VKT 1942 Mosin. I have owned 2 in the past. Whatever it is about them I constantly hit myself with my thumb in the nose upon firing. However, it is only with the M91. I don't know if it is because the rear sight is so low to the barrel or what? Anyone else encounter this? Is there a fix for it?

Thanks

It sounds as if your head is too close to your hand that is gripping the stock.

What I do, to find the ideal spot, is to open the bolt and have it completely retracted to the rear of the action. I then place my cheek on the stock so that my nose is clear of the back of the bolt (i.e. so you don't hit your nose or face while operating the bolt). I then close the bolt and while keeping my head in that same position, aim down the sights until they line up. This usually ends up giving me some measure of comfort while shooting.

It could also be that your hand is moving back with the rifle due to the recoil but your head is staying where it was before firing.

I hope this helps.

Don't run you thumb across the small of the butt: leave it pointing forward. This is my technique for high-powered bolt actions. It hurts a lot less than jamming my thumb kunckle up my left nostril when I fire. I also got into the old-school habit of throwing the bolt with the weapon at the shoulder.

Cheers!

I bought one of those Neoprene shell holder/recoil pad for the stock. I guess my problem was length of pull. Man does this thing shoot!
