Whats the best way to remove the cosmoline on those surplus pistols? Disassemble, dump in mineral spirits and use a brush?

Brake clean and a nylon brush worked great for my TT33 and SKS, just don't use it on wood.

Some guys use brake clean, hot water or a hair dryer. It comes down to what ever works for you.

You could ask 10 guys the best way to remove cosmoline and you'll get 10 answers.

Take everything apart that comes apart. Throw parts in a bucket with some dish soap. Dump a pot of boiling water over it and wait a minute. Tilt the bucket back and forth a few times to give the melted cosmo a chance to come out and float to the surface. Gently pour water out, being careful not to dump important parts down the drain. (Don't put plastic or wood parts in boiling water...clean them separately).

Repeat.

This will get rid of most of the cosmoline, but you'll still have some residue. Clean each part with dish soap and a toothbrush. Use a pipe cleaner, or something similar to clean small holes, like the firing pin channel. Rinse with hot water and put each part on a towel or newspaper as you clean it.

Oil everything with gun oil. CLP spray or something similar will be the easiest way to make sure everything is coated. Wipe off excess with a rag. Run a patch down the barrel to remove excess oil.

Put it all together and give it a final wipe with a clean rag. You're done...

Boiling water + dish soap did the work for me yesterday, cleaning an SKS. Luckily for you there is no soaked wood part, which are a real mess to clean...

If they have a mineral spirits bath at your range then that is the most obvious method along with some q tips and shop towels. I hate getting water anywhere near my guns.

I used a halogen work lite to bake out most of the cosmoline. Set the item in a foil pie plate, elevate it on some spacers, and position a halogen work light directly in front, a couple of inches away. Give it an hour and you'll sweat out most of the goop. Then clean as per suggestions above. I find this method gets you 90% of the way there and saves a bunch of effort.
