I want to, in future, acquire M96 either used or new, once RobArm decides to crank up the production again. But I want to cut the barrel to 18.5".
My question is, do I have to account for the 1.5" built in muzzle brake when doing this? How would I then calculate how much to chop off? Then once off, muzzle brake is no longer the part of barrel, right? That makes the barrle only 18.5" so then I can't cut the barrel because it is already only 18.5"? I am royally confused. Could someone please help?

For the purposes of Canadian law, the muzzle brake is not considered part of the barrel. Permanently attached muzzle devices are only considered part of the barrel length for American law. So if the barrel is 20", including a 1.5" muzzle brake, for Canadian law it is already an 18.5" barrel. I would imagine you could have the muzzle brake removed, then maybe have the barrel threaded for a different muzzle device, but you wouldn't be able to cut it any shorter than 18.5".

On my M96's the "muzzle break" is nothing more than a couple ports in the barrel, not a seperate or attached device.

The legal definition of barrel length is from the bolt face to the end of the rifling.

Muzzle brakes that are integral to the barrel (eg: all one piece of steel) do count as the barrel length, such as the AR180B.

So if I cut the barrel to 18.5" and never mind the muzzle brake, then it's ok? Then is it ok to not have propper muzzle brake?

I assume you are refering to a thread on flashhider when you say "muzzle brake". Thread on devices to not count for barrel length. Cut your barrel to 18.5 inches, ad then thread it. The flash hider will add length but will not count as barrel length.

I've already stated what barrel length is.
