I was given a Mauser by a relative it has been sporterized, the barrel appears to be uncut. The only markings on the rifle I can find are M95M "Budapest" on the barrel and a "M" above the serial number on the bolt head. I stripped and cleaned it and it seams to cycle all right. The interwebz say that a M95M takes 8mm mauser and some say that it should not be fired, but I am wondering if any one here has one and can offer advice on whether I should even try to shot this old girl or not? The bolt is a straight pull and it is rust free with an unbroken extractor. NO pics at the moment I will take some this weekend.

The title should say M95M Budapest, I ain't so good with the spellings.

You do have a Yugo conversion of an M95 Austro Hungarian Straight Pull Rifle!

The "M" after the M95 denotes it was converted to fire the 8mm Mauser round. It takes the standard Mauser Strippers too as the magazine will have the original charger hole blocked off at the bottom with a floorplate.

Always have firearms you are unsure about checked by a competent gunsmith. But it should be totally safe to fire, and fun to boot! Good to hear the extractor is not broken too! Make sure you ALWAYS load the rounds INTO the magazine and then work the bolt. Otherwise you have a VERY good chance of breaking the extractor when it tries to snap over the rim of a round shoved into the chamber.

Forgot to say (and definitely not to nit-pick :redface: ) , but what you have there is a Steyr-Mannlicher M95M, converted to take "Mauser ammunition" (don't you love how crude and imprecise my explanations are ? :D )....

There should be an adjustable rear-sight just in front of the chamber ....:yingyang:....but it shoots low at 200 yards ?....:confused:

Most were zeroed for something like 300 meters (minimum), IIRC....is the front sight original ?
 
The biggest question is:

What ammunition are you using?

It should shoot best with Surplus European (Yugoslavian) 8mm FMJ.

If you are shooting North American Soft point, you could hypothetically be shooting low. Plus, with the Bubba front sight, it's hard to say what the previous owner was shooting through it?? Reloads? Federal, Remington, Winchester? Who knows...

There is really no way to change the POI in terms of elevation on an M95 if the tangent sight is all the way to the rear and still not hitting where it should at the correct distance.

Also, is the barrel shortened?

PS, like Cyclone said, you should be using 7.92x57mm ammunition. Preferably new made PRVI stuff, or properly tuned handloads. I would defer to CGN member "Smellie" on the correct handload for the M95M.
 
I was using 170grain Rem Core lock. I am going to try a different height front post to change the POI. I am going to pick up some PRVI next chance I get. This will be my new quad gun its shoots good and the recoil is very manageable.

Remington Core Lokt 8mm Mauser 170 gr. is 2360 fps / 2102 ft. lbs.

and... for instance..

Sellior and Bellot 8mm Mauser 196 gr. is 2592 fps / 2924 ft. lbs. :eek:

At 100 yards, Remington will have 1.6" rise, zero at 150yards, low 4.4" at 200 yards, and 23.7" low at 300 yards, and 128.9" low at 500 yards!!!!! :eek: :(

Even American made Hornady ammo only drops 10.5" at 300 yards, and is bang on at 200!

Best bet is to handload if you can or just check out the ballistics charts of the ammo you buy, and try a few different brands for your rifle.

These are neat old rifles. If you need 8x57 stripper clips, let me know and I can drop some off next time I am through Big River.

I have three or four of these M95M rifles. A couple of them have really nice wood. Have fun with yours!:)
