M98 (FN Action) and M38 barrel

And the threads on a M38 are .98" X 12 per inch.

Guntech, is the 1.0 X 12 a common variation?

... No, that was just a rough figure to indicate there is about .100" difference between the two sizes of M-98 threads ...

The short answer is "probably not". The Swedish M38 is a M96 small ring thread, and most M98's are large ring, the exception being some Turkish Mausers.

Thanks for all the replys.
I guess I would need to find a small ring Turk M98.

Any other suggestions on how to build a cheap 6.5x55 on something other than a M96 action?

Bill Leeper installs small shank barrels on larger thread receivers by bushing the barrel. He did one for me, and it works just fine.

You cannot tell it has been bushed, and the rifle routinely shoots sub-inch and a half groups. :)

98s in 6.5x55 are out there, just be patient and one will come along, I got one form the EE that had been posted for 4 weeks as a 96 sporter! big score.

AS the world's biggest 6.5 fan I have a hard time saying this but another option for a 98 action rifle is to step up to the 7x57 shoot the 175 grain bullet and you have all the joy of a 6.5.

If you purchase a K Kale Turkish mauser, it is a '98 mauser threaded to a small ring barrel, you can thread on your M38 barrel. I have done this to make a "Twede". If you turn down the barrel lip (approx 1/8") on the front of the Turk receiver it will have the same dimensions as a normal M98. Hope this helps.

I would be interested in a 7x57 for sure, but at present leaning toward the 6.5...but hey I'm closing NO doors here (except on the 8mm)
I like the range of bullets available for the 6.5 under 100gr for varmits (not that I've ever shot a varmit) up to 140gr + for deer size game. It seems so ideal (versatile).
