A little disappointed when receiving my spotting scope I ordered! So I was looking for a decent S-Scope for the range and was doing some research over the net. I ended up purchasing the red field 20x60 cause of people raving about it and cost efficient. So it came in and the first thing I see is made in China on the box... I read that it was made in the US on the same assembly line as Luepold!
What to do just hope it does it's job well enough!

While Leupold owns Redfield, they are not even in the same class when it comes to quality. There was a time when Redfield produced exceptional products, however it is now a cheap line owned by Leupold to compete against the cheap Bushnells, Tasco's and similar. Some Redfields do share common parts with their higher end Leupold brethren, but the optics/glass/coatings aren't even close. On the range, you'll likely be ok. When it somes to hunting, I only run Leupold or Bushnell Elite series optics.

If it was made on the same line at luepold then it would be more then likely make in the Philippines.
Redfeild was taken over by them a few years ago.
There is a reason that luepold does not have made in the USA on the box of most the their products.
Nothing wrong with me but Vortex has a better value for the $$$

You have that back asswards. Some of Vortex's line is made in the Philippines, the Viper for instance. The Crossfire is made in China. The Razor has Japanese glass (good quality). None of them are made in the US, they're assembled there. Leupold's and some Redfields (Revolution) are made in Oregon. They may have a few offshore parts like lenses but there's far more US made stuff in those than any of Vortex's line.

There's a plethora of threads on Vortex's warranty, which has me question the "value for the $$$". I have a few of the Redfield Revolution and consider them great value, especially at the old prices.

I have a couple of the older Redfield scopes and they are excellent, back when they were made in the USA, I'm skeptical about buying any of the newer ones though.

Is anything made in North America any longer

With Leupold owning Redfield, designing the products, and backing the warranty, you are getting a good product, especially the Revolution riflescopes as they are made in the U.S.A. But lots of people mistakenly assume all the new Redfield stuff is made in the U.S.A.

Don't be completely surprised if your Chinese-built spotting scope serves you well. The Chinese can make things as good as the customer wants them to be, if the customer will pay enough for it. Too bad so many companies go there to have junk made as cheaply as possible. I'm not particularly a Leupold fan but I do think Leupold/Redfield will be more particular about their outsourced products than some brands.

Isnt the glass the heart of any optics system? That's a pretty important part to scrimp on.

Everything is made in China these days in one of those Factory Cities just churning out product :( Quantity not Quality

I'm not a fan of 'Made in China" products, but not all products coming out of China is crap. On a small scale, I purchased a Weaver "Made in USA" picatinny base, got home opened it up, the whole bottom side of the one piece base was not even, not close to being usable. So it was returned and I purchased a Millet "Made in China" picatinny base that was made to perfect standards. I can't speak for all China products, but some products are as good as any others. Tons of American companies are USA companies selling 'Made in China" products, this is nothing new. My climber tree stand is sold from an American company, if I can recall API outdoors, the tree stand has "Made in China" stamped on it, and it's a damn good, well built climber.

No no, I know all about the vortex, my PST is about to makes its 4th trip back to them.
A lot more then a few parts are made off shore.
I have no issue with made in china product, much of it is quite good, I have an issue with the price people charge for it.
parts or products that save the company 80% saveing and the price is only 10% less the a non off shore product.

China has some of the most advanced manufacturing facilities on the planet. Thinking otherwise is just ignorance. Personally I would take a product manufactured by a premium manufacturer in China over one in the USA. Unions and a poor QC have ruined Americas manufacturing reputation, even within their top brand names.

If you want to ditch your Leupolds because they are made in China, I am sure there are many here willing to scoop them up ;)

I've owned a Redfield when they first came out and for the $220 price I payed for it, it was a good scope. It was a $200 scope. Now that there upwards of $300+ I feel that there are better options out there like Vortex.
I know there are no shortage of people sh!tting on them for the "garbage" they (Vortex) produce but my take on them is that as they have one of the best warranty in the biz so your going to hear a lot of people raving about there great customer service. The more people post about them the more people seem to think that they make "garbage". I would love to know in comparison how many Leupolds, Bushnell... go back for warranty as well, where just not hearing about it. I'll give you an example.
My wife bought me a Bushnell H20 8x42 bino's for Christmas 6 years ago and they worked great till my hunting trip last Oct where they crapped out the first day. I emailed Bushnell and they sent me a new pair. I got them a few months later and low and behold it was broken right out of the box. So back to them with an email saying that I no longer trusted there H20 line and asked for an upgrade which they have done but I am still waiting for in the mail.
For me optics under $500 your going to roll the dice on it working or not and for how long regardless of where it is made.
