Made my sks metal promag magazine better

I thought I would share my findings about how I made my metal promag magazine better.

First off when I bought it I was disappointed in it as when I installed it the magazine was not allowing it to feed properly whether with stripper clips or without and the bolt would bind up.

It ticked me off because I loved the look of wood and metal, not polymer. So I tossed it in my parts bin and forgot about it.

Anyways one day I decided to tackle it to try and fix this problem, either I was going to break the magazine or fix it. So I installed it back in my sks and tried to diagnose the problem. What I found was the follower is not properly sized in the magazine, it would tilt its nose forward cause feed jams and bind with the bolt.
So when I pushed down the nose to the proper angle I noticed a large gap between the follower and inside edge of the magazine.
I measured it and it came out to .155 inches which was roughly the same thickness as two popsicle sticks.
I then super glued them to the back of the follower, trimmed to be flush with the edges and now it works.

Here are some pictures

I've tested it with dummy rounds and it feeds like it should, ejects like it should and the stripper clips work nicely as well.

I haven't live fired it yet but the countless times I've tested with dummies I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Anyways I thought I would share what I done of anyone else was in the same boat as me

I have a couple sks mags with a follower that doesn't have the bolt hold open tab and tilt like a b@$t@rd.

The body of the mag has a slip for the bolt hold open tab. They are totally useless without a quality follower. First thing I would print if i had a 3-d printer

I just saw your sks on Flickr. Absolutely beautiful rifle!

Sorry if I'm asking some dumb questions but I am lacking knowledge on the SKS.

Is that model an SKS-D (mag fed)? If not and those steel promags fit a standard SKS can you link where to purchase those mags?

Thanks SigWig!
They are on the list to purchase as soon as they come in and I've got some slightly used popsicle sticks and glue already to go!

I love the look of an SKS-D and this will make my SKS rifle close enough

You're doing the lord's work here, thank you sir!

Thank you for the kind words. Like everyone on this forum, we're here to help each other out.

Thank you! It's not a sks d unfortunately and I bought that mag 6-8 months ago. I'm sure some retailer might have one if you look hard enough on Google or check out other firearm kijiji sites.

I could've went with the tapco option but these rifles looks best the iron and wood look
