Hey,

Trying to get a .17rem to feed from a .223 MDT AICS style polymer mag (Savage Model 10 Short Action) Anyone ever do anything similar? Seems like the cartridge needs to be angled higher sooner to line up with the chamber.

Thoughts? Comments?

Thanks,

if you contact MDT they may have a solution for you. seems to me i read something about that in one of their newsletters or perhaps on their website.

Just a bump to an old thread, but with an answer. MDT plastic .223 mags will not feed .17rem in a Savage action. I think the problem is the bullet does not contact the feed ramp in the action until too far into the bolt stroke. With the end result being the cartridge is then stuck horizontal and unable to get angled into the chamber. Playing with feed lips was a waste, too loose and the cartridge would just pop up 90 degrees and jam. This is also a problem with factory Savage stocks and mags.

Solution: Bought a steel Accurate Mags in .223. it looks like it's just a .308mag with an insert. This is ideal because now there is a little shelf 1/4" wide or so at the front of the mag. I then built up a v-shape ledge, shaped to the profile of the feedramp with some hot glue on this shelf. Now the cartridge shoulder contacts the hot glue shelf and gets angled up into the chamber. Not fancy, but it works.

Just thought I'd share in case someone else ends up with this problem.
