Hey, fellas, nice thread. I was wondering about mag pouches. I am a big fan of the AK and have been considering a CZ-858 as a buddy of mine has one and so far I am really impressed. Some people have told me in the past and I see on EE forums that AR-15 mag pouches also fit AK mags. Are they actually effective as a dual mag pouch and does this translate to CZ mags? I had a good AK chest rig from the CatBox that I carried C7 mags in but I never tried AK or CZ mags in my C7 pouches.
If anyone has anything to say either respond here or PM me.
Cheers-Randy

I just got my Eagle SKD Universal chest rig today, which will hold two AR mags per pouch, or one M14, AK, Vz.58, DPMS mag per pouch.
I think generally a dedicated AR magazine pouch will not fit an AK or Vz.58 magazine due to the dimensions of said magazines being totally different. If it'll fit an AK mag, it should fit a Vz.58 mag just as well since there isn't much difference between them.

I have a set of HSGI Taco pouches mounted on my chest rig. Those things are great! I can shove whatever I want in them and they'll hold them securely.

So it sounds like if I want pouches that will "do it all" and not suck I should go taco but if I want dedicated VZ or CV pouches do the tacos have anything over regular AK style pouches?

Aside from being a "do it all" as you say, the taco pouches don't have a flap or bungee cord going over the mag. There is no fumbling when trying to access a mag or returning it to your chest rig. The mags are held in place by the pressure exerted around the body of the mag by the bungee cord threaded throughout the pouch. For that reason I find them "fast". No doubt that training with whatever mag pouches you get you'll eventually become more fluid at performing mag changes.

My Taco pouches are my dedicated CZ/VZ 58 mag pouches for the simple reason that it is my only mag fed rifle. I do like the idea though that I can use my same chest rig/setup (if it suits) with any other type of magazine.

You can thread bungies through the loop thingies sticking up from the front and back if you wish to do so.
Between half the mag sticking out of the pouch, and the sides of the Taco being made up of some molded plastic thing that prevent the metal sticking out from the floor plate or around the top of the mag from getting hung up, drawing a mag is pretty easy.

If you have a coupled mag will it fit in these "Hot Taco" pouches?

Just came across something else out there besides the "hot taco" recomendation.

They have many to choose from. I think I will order these up and put them threw the paces and post back later with what I thought about them.

So it looks like you have something else to fumble your fingers with. I like to keep my eyes looking out and about not down wondering why the hell my mag wont come out. Taco Taco. Give it a try but I think the less moves to replace your mag the better. And yes I still have a problem with not removing the mag from the pouch first, remove the empty mag and then replace with the good one. Its about half and half, gotta work on that muscle memory thing

I really like the look of the Taco but I have always felt that a pouch needs a flap (velcro) as I worry that the mags will fall out. Do the mags get caught on things in the bush? How about other kit you are wearing? Swinging your rifle back and forth across your body?

I've only used mine in a four day rifle course last may. Never had a mag fall out but then i was running through the bush just rolling in the 'skeg, up and down and all around, prone kneeling etc. Mind you it was just a four day course and not playing in the sandbox climbing up and down on vehicles etc. I have the singles so I can hug the ground better.

Honestly, a four day crse is as much (or more) action as a Maintainer is likely to see in a six month deployment so other that the tagets shooting back it sounds like you gave it a pretty good run. I think I would want doubles but I feel confident that Taco is the way to go at this point. Now all I need to do is get the rifle! I would like to know what the deal with the red tape is in the above pics. I have put guntape on my C7 mag bottoms as a field expedient mag pull (before MagPul came along). Maybe they are for finding them after the crse. Even a dump bag is annoying but I definately can't afford to lose a mag in training. Thanks for all your help, fellas.

So I dropped the 762 Tactical order after buying this off of flee bay;

Damm thing holds 3 mag's on the inside pouch hidden by a zipper above the mag pouch's. Then stripper clips pouches located on both sides of the chest & in the middle of the torso 4 mag's perfectly curved for the 858 mags and using the left hand to retreve them. 3 gun here I come :D
P.S. the best part was this item only costing $60 to ship it to me :p

I've got two chest rigs, and my main mag pouches on both are HSGI. The non-modular rig holds 4 AR mags each and the modular pouches on my other rig hold 3 AR mags each. I believe in both cases, 2 CZ mags will fit in the pouches; however, regardless of how many CZ mags fit in the pouches, the mags are a bit too tall and the velcro closures are pretty much useless - I need to secure them with the fastex buckles. Tac Tailor makes some modular AK mag pouches - the CZ mags will probably fit much better in those.
