I have been mulling over the idea of building an AR. I have some mechanical abilities, access to help on the nastier parts, and I can do little bits at a time as the money presents itself (I know it is probably cheaper to buy one put together already).

I was looking at the IRunGuns website and I saw the Mag Tactical lowers on sale. They are made of magnesium, but I am reading good things about them in the states (other than the finish, which I can live with) and I am not planning on putting it through hard use often. Does anyone here have any experience with these lowers?

The one I got was not dimensionally correct. The front take down pin bosses were oversized. The radius was too large and interfered with the lower by about 1/16 inch. I had to machine them down.

The safety required some greased persuasion to go over the trigger. Stag lpk.

Everything else went together ok.

As for the finish, mine is FDE. It is just paint over bare metal and stated so in the packaging.

I paid the previous sale price of around $120 US, I feel it was not worth it. At $99 , YMMV .

Honestly for the weight savings of a couple ounces over a standard Aluminum lower, you might as well get a nice bare bones forged lower, and get a light contour (or short) barrel. You will notice WAY more of a difference in a lighter barrel than you would EVER notice with a lighter lower receiver.

These lowers get terrible reviews if you research them. Constantly out of spec and bad finishes.

Yep! Magnesium is really not a good material for an AR lower, it flexes and warps too much with any heat, and it's not as 'hard' as Aluminum is (AKA resistant to deformation). The only thing is has for it, is a really good strength to weight ratio; of which Aluminum is still really good. Plus Magnesium doesn't hold a finish really well, you can't apply much for finishes as if you heat it up at all it'll warp. You can't anodize it (at least I don't think you can) and the only thing you can really apply is paint, but you need a good primer on it.

As for getting one because it's cheap? There is a reason! You don't have to spend a bundle to get a GOOD AR lower, so don't cheap out on that part! 250 bucks gets you a Canadian made Motiuk MFG lower that WILL last you a lifetime. Or wait for another shipment of Aero Precision lowers or wait for One Shot Tactical to get some more Rainier Arms stripped lowers in.

If you were going for an ultralight build I can see this have SOME merit, but it would be more like the old AR-7 survival rifle, only for a limit amount of use.
