Magazine barely fits 10 rounds!

Hey I got a new Sig 226 (first handgun) and its very hard to get 10 rounds in the mag which holds 10. Just wondering if it will get a lot better with time or will I need to cut the spring or what? Thanks
 
New springs tend to be stiff. I usually keep the new mags loaded with dummy rounds for the first little while when not in use. The spring will lighten up with time.
 
Which mags do you have? I just got a new Sig p226 with 15 round mags welded to 10 and they were super easy to load from the get go.

You say it is your first handgun so maybe you are just not use to it. You can get special loaders which will help your hands out and make it much easier to load plus it will save you time at the range. My favorite is the UpLULA magazine loader. Their official website is www . maglula . com

You can buy them at many stores in Canada.

Actually springs tend to lose their stiffness from multiple cycles of compression and decompression. Keeping the magazines loaded won't help a lot. I found loading and unloading multiple times a day until it's loose enough usually works best.

The best method of course is to shoot...A LOT! :ar15:
 
I see stars trying to load the 10th round into my OEM Gen4 Glock21 mags! I refuse to use the supplied mag loader:mad:
I leave my mags loaded with live rounds (locked in the ammo box of course) until they are needed.

I have the same problem with a Glock.

I cannot get the bottom plate off the mag. When I do, I want to see if I can shave a tenth of an inch off the part of the follower that is bottoming out, so the last round is not tight.

Can you take your SIG mag apart?

Don't cut the spring, believe it or not, that will make it stiffer.

I have a Ruger SR9 (yes I know, not the same gun, but the same "issue") and when I first got it, it was hard to load 10 rnds without using the mag loader.

As I shot more and more rounds through the gun using the same mags, I noticed that it's now a helluva lot easier to load 10 without using the mag loader.

Using the mag will (for lack of a better term) "break in" the mag spring and it will load 10 easier. Good excuse to keep shooting, no?:D
 
Have you tried a mag loader? I used to have a Norc NZ75 and the magazine was so stiff I couldn't get the 10th round in. Then I got an Uplula loader (which works with most centre fire pistols.) After that, no problem.

The UpLULA still wouldn't load the 10th round into my M&P magazines when they were brand new.
 
I've been at work all day and I dont feel like taking it apart to see if it's welded lol, well it has the hole to show the 10th round, but its really stiff...it's probably just a standard 226 (9mm) mag, both were stiff and it took alot of pressure to push it down.

If it helps, looks like there is about 1.75" of space under the 10th round to the bottom of the mag. I'll try loading and unloading it, just got the ammo in today. I'll try the speedloader if I need to.

I had the same issue with my Sig 226 mags. I have an Elite and a base model, the Elite's mags I couldn't put more than 8 the 1st time out, then 9, then a thumb/finger bleeding 10 after 3rd trip. I think it's because they're new.

Overall consensus on these "Checkmate" mags are that they are CRAP. MecGar mags (scarce in Canada it seems) are much better.

Last year I was lucky enough to find some SIG factory 15 rounders blocked to 10. They're the best mag I've ever had, easier to load than the mecgar, all steel construction with what I believe to be phosphate finish. 50$ each from Sporteque; They had bought a huge used law enforcement lot. I managed to snag 6. They don't list them on their website anymore, they're probably out...

I can post pictures later tonight if you want to see...

There was a place in California that was sending 10 round blocked/pinned mags up here. Something was odd, though, I remember that whenever you tried to type in their name here, it came out as "********". Something like "high cap mags.com" or something like that. Anyone remember the place??
 
I didnt want to spend $35 on a mag loader but i did because i was doing my black badge and i was shooting a few hundred rds in an afternoon. Worth every penny! Saves your thumb.
