Magazine/Barrel Clamps, How "Necessary" Are They?

I've been a bit sidetracked the past while with new gun purchases that I've neglected my 870 project. I'd like to mount the Surefire integrated forend light, but the sling swivel on the bottom of the barrel/magazine clamp would obstruct the bezel. I like the idea of retaining a 2-point sling but some of these aftermarket barrel/magazine clamps are expensive, considering the purpose I think they serve.

If I did away with the clamp entirely, what affect would it have on my gun, would the point of impact shift or would the magazine tube be less secure? What if I got a cheap plastic clamp instead? I really like the idea of moving the sling swivel from underneath, to the side, but I have a hard time justifying $100 just to do that. Thoughts?

Not sure but, one time I didn't tighten my mag extension and mag clamp enough on my 870 and when I pulled the trigger the shotgun basically disassembled itself instantly in a big puff. It was pretty funny after the fact.

you will be fine without one, the clamp helps with overall tightness of the rig, but it will function fine without it

If you have a good-quality extension and assemble it correctly that cannot happen. The mag clamp is unnecessary on extensions of 3 rds or less, and their need on longer extensions is dubious at best.

"Rode" - How can a sheet metal clamp "improve" slug groups??? You have no way to ensure that it will be installed to the EXACT same place everytime and be torqued to the EXACT same specs, thereby affecting the barrel harmonics EXACTLY the same and staying at the same tension from shot to shot. In the absence of scientific and repeatable proof I remain unconvinced...

I never installed the barrel clamp on any of my shotguns. If the barrel clamp is what keeps your mag tube from loosening, you have other problems.

The factory +2 extension seems pretty secure without the clamp, but then again, I haven't actually fired the gun without the clamp installed. Perhaps this is something I should try the next time I bring it to the range. Again, I just don't want the sling swivel and the sling to partially obstruct the flashlight's beam.
