Noob question: I know that the legal magazine capacity for semi-automatic rifles and shotguns is 5, but does this apply to rimfire rifles and pump action shotguns?

Thanks :50cal:

regulation is not about rifles or shotgun, it's about mags only.

1) Mag for center-fire semi rifle = 5 rounds
2) Mag for handgun = 10 round

Mag = mag, not clip, not cylinder
Semi-auto center-fire rifle = semi-auto center-fire rifle, not shotgun, not rim-fire, etc
For = designed and manufactured specifically for that time of firearm in specific caliber.

Are there any exceptions? I'm sure I've seen 10 round AR mags around.

Of course you have. They are approved pistol magazines. Because they were designed and manufactured for use in pistols, they are not subject to the 5 shot semi auto centrefire rifle magazine limitation.

"...hunting regulations limited you to..." They do for migratory birds. Ontario has decided that it applies for hunting anything with a shotgun too.

Now what happens if a CO comes around when I'm gopher hunting with my shotgun and I don't have it plugged off?

You are in SK. I would suggest that you check SK's hunting regulations. Then you will know the answer to your question.
The 3 shot rule came in with restrictions on hunting of migratory birds. Some jurisdictions adopted it for all shotgun hunting. Some didn't.

If I remember correctly from my course;

You can fire a rimfire till the barrel melts, no mag limit.
Shotguns, 2+1 for hunting, no limit for target shooting.
Centerfire rifles, 5 rounds I do believe. Not sure if there is a different limit for target.

Makes no difference if it's semi auto or not.

Most of the other postings in this thread are correct. The last two sentences in this posting that I quoted are FALSE.

From the CFC website ( http://www.cfc-cafc.gc.ca/faq/default_e.asp#a6 )

As set out in Criminal Code Regulations, some large-capacity magazines are prohibited regardless of the class of firearm to which the magazines are attached. As a general rule, the maximum magazine capacity is:

-5 cartridges for most magazines designed for a semi-automatic centre-fire long gun; or
-10 cartridges for most handgun magazines

A large-capacity magazine is not prohibited if it has been permanently altered so that it cannot hold more than the number of cartridges allowed by law. Acceptable ways to alter a magazine are set out in the regulations.

There is no limit to the magazine capacity for semi-automatic rim-fire long guns, or for other long guns that are not semi-automatics.

"...gopher hunting with my shotgun and I don't have it plugged off?..." You'd have to prove you were not hunting game birds. Saskatchewan requires a plug for all game birds. Page 8 of your hunting regs.

The Migratory Bird Act is Federal law. It is the legislation that mandates 3 rounds on in a shotgun. Quebec's hunting regs don't mention shotgun mag capacity for hunting anything else. (At least not on-line.) Other than it's illegal to hunt caribou with a shotgun and that non-toxic shot is required for migratory birds.
