Just took the Black Badge course this weekend.

Asked if 40 cal mags can be used in a 9mm so they hold more than 10 rounds in IPSC
Also asked about using 50Beo mags in Multi-gun.

Instructor insisted 10 rounds was max for a pistol no matter what, and that using pistol mags in a rifle was OK, but no Beo mags.

I even printed off the RCMP bulletin for him to read, but he still wouldn't give me an answer and I didn't want to push it with him.

So. Can these magazine be used in IPSC or Multi-gun shoots?

Here's and email from the RCMP on the mags.

Thank you for your inquiry.

If a 40S&W calibre magazine is used to feed 9mm para calibre cartridges into a handgun, the number of 9mm para calibre cartridges is not relevant to the classification of the magazine, regardless of whether it is the number of 9mm para cartridges that the magazine is capable of containing or the number actually loaded.

The classification of the magazine is based on the type of cartridge (or cartridges) for which the magazine was designed, and the number that it contains. Thus it is possible for a magazine designed for 40 S&W calibre ammunition to be loaded with more than 10 cartridges of 9mm para calibre ammunition and be used in a 9mm para calibre handgun if the magazine in question cannot hold more than ten 40 S&W calibre cartridges.

For this particular circumstance to be legitimate (more than ten rounds of 9mm para calibre ammunition loaded in a magazine designed for 40 S&W calibre ammunition), a number of conditions must be met:

1. the magazine in question must be designed to contain 40 S&W calibre cartridges exclusively;
2. the magazine must not be designed to contain 9mm para calibre cartridges;
3. the magazine must not be designed to be dual purpose (designed for both 40 S&W and 9mm para calibres);
4. the magazine must be designed and manufactured exclusively for a handgun;
5. the magazine cannot hold more than ten 40S&W calibre cartridges;
6. the magazine must not be designed or manufactured for use in a fully automatic firearm of any kind, nor for use in any of the firearms specified in Subsections 3(1)(iv), (v), or (vi) of the magazine regulations.

Other conditions may apply depending on the exact circumstances.

We have a max of 10 rounds for IPSC here.

You can legally shoot 13 as far as the Canadian law goes, but IPSC Canada rules states you can't have more than 10.

Same may apply with Beowulf mags. Check with your 3-gun organisation as to what is kosher.

I have not heard anything about multigun using .50 beowulf mags....however, once they are more common, you won't see anyone complaining. 10rd rules for handgun are the rules, as not everyone would have access to functional magazines that for instance, hold more 9mm than .40.

Most 3-gun matches in Canada are run under rulesets developed by the organizers. The same thing is true in the US for many matches also. Typically, unless it is stated that magazine capacites are in effect (as is the case for IPSC) you should be good to go - if in doubt, ask the MD before the match begins just to make sure.

Our matches at East Elgin we have no restrictions on things like the Beowolf mags/XCR mags.

What's the limit for IPSC rifle in Canada? Not that we seem to have many rifle comps but is there a specific Canadian rule like there is for pistol?

No limits unless you are shooting in Manual Action Standard, in which case it's 5+1 rounds. No Canadian exemption.

ok, it`s time to learn: please don`t through heavy objects at me :)

Canadian Law: 5 rounds for semiauto rifles and shotguns....right? I know I know - with AR-15 its easy - LAR or Biowolf mag.....

How about semiauto shotgun for multy gun? I see so many +5, +6, +7 extensions on the shotguns.....is it leagal and WHY??????

or the limit is just for the magazine fed semiauto rifle and shotty: magtube doesn`t count????????

in semi auto in Canada the mag limit is for the largest shell it can chamber. therefore if you have a gun with a 3" or 3.5" chamber you can have a magazine that will hold 5.9 of that sized round and it will hold more than that of 2 3/4" shells. Up to 7 in the mag for 3.5" and also a spare shell on the lifter and one in the chamber to start with up to 9 in a semi auto in three gun.

I have a Benelli M1 Super90 Feild.......it has 3 rounds tube mag (for 3", so only 3 of 2 3/4 rounds will fit).....
there are so many pictures of 3 gun set ups on this site showing semiauto shotguns fitted with extensions........that is why I`m asking......

also, if its 5 rounds limit.....is it total 5 (including chamber) or 5+1????

I find it humorous that IPSC Canada limits pistol mags to prevent the arms race, but OKs it for rifle and shotgun.
A double standard to make Vince proud...

Like Sosa says ^^

Some of us import those long mag extensions to get the tube sticking out past the barrel. It protects your muzzle and front sight when you chuck your scatter gun in a dump barrel. They all have to be permanently pinned in order to meet the 5.999 capacity though.

A much as I have a difference of opinion with Vince over several things, this was not him. I don't think that there is enough IPSC rifle or shotgun in Canada to worry about a ruling. In fact Alberta is looking at having its first IPSC rifle and shotgun in recent memory this summer. I just hope that going forward we don't see any similar limitations imposed on the long gun side of it.

Personally I could never get the 9mm in 40cal mags to function to the point that I would use them in a serious competition. I am still playing with a few different idea's though.

I would have to some more digging to see where the mag limit clarification came from, it may be IPSC Canada as opposed to IPSC world.

It's a good question: Magazine limits only apply to the actual magazine (a tube for most shotguns). So, many semiauto shotguns will legally hold 5 in the magazine, plus one in the chamber and another one on the shell lifter (ghost load).

Not to mention, as Sosa said, the added capacity you get by using 2.75" shells in a 3.5" shotgun. A guy on my squad at the last WRAS shoot legally had 9rds in his Benelli semiauto.

But good stage design can (and should, IMO) nerf mag capacity advantages. :D

Mag limits for IPSC canada came from IPSC canada with approval from IPSC World.

Piligrim the law is that a non restricited, semi auto, centre fire firearm is 5 rounds in the magazine. no restricitons on what is in the chamber or on the follower.
