Can any on please explain to me why the SMLE magazine has two locking notches on the rear and the No4 only has one?I finally got a SMLE (sporterized) and was just wondering. I made the cardinal sin years ago of grinding the lower notch off two SMLE mags so they would fit my No4. Way back in the late 70's I think. Just a wondering. The two mags fit just fine with out the extra notch. Thanks

The No. 4 was designed to be easier and cheaper to manufacture. One lug works, so they left the second one off.
"...cardinal sin years ago..." It wasn't a big deal in the late 70's. There were lots of mags around then and they weren't selling for $30 each. You could get a nice rifle of either model for under $100 too. The No. 1 bayonet sold for $20. Spikes, of all types, for a buck or so. Those were the days.

Oh Yes those were the days. Bought my No 4 Mk1/2 full wood for 40.00 from a friend. We would go to the local surplus store and buy ammo for 3.95 for 20 rds of fmj and drive out to the back of a local subdivision and shoot down trees. We had lots of fun "logging" back then.
