Hello, getting my Ruger American Ranch ready for the range in January and I have literally never had to buy a mag before let alone an AR mag.

It came with a stainless steel “Duramag” with an orange follower, is that the best way to go? I’ve seen some Magpul PMAGs pinned to 5 rounds. Everything seems to be out of stock everywhere.

Basically I know nothing about this. Any tips?

Everything I’ve thrown at it has worked except for the magazine that came with my Keltec RDB. LAR15 metal and plastic, magpul pinned etc.

The 5/rnd mag that came with the rifle is junk imo. The rounds don't feed consistently and get jammed at the ramp.

I picked up a MFT 10/rnd mag at Target Sports for ~$18. I had no idea that it would perform flawlessly. In hindsight I should have went back and picked up more but I have a bunch of Colt 5/20 thanks to my "dust collector".

The problem with these "longer" mags is if you want to shoot off a sand bag. The mags get in the way but a bi-pod fixes that.

Those Cross Mags look interesting but will present the same problem shooting off a bag.....

If you are concerned about use of AR mags and shooting your RAR off a bag, why not have just bought the original version (non-AR mag type)? The AR version is more popular because mags are much cheaper, readily available (in both 5 and 10 round varieties) and the original RAR is a cheap piece of plastic that costs $50-60.

Cross mags can be coupled or detached to be shorter.

Actually, I bought the RAR Ar15 mag version because I had a bunch of Ar15 mags and .223 ammo lying around due to the OIC. I was just pointing out shooting this version off a sand bag. Problem solved after mounting a bi-pod (that I was planning to do anyway).

I have had zero issues with the supplied mag.

I’m probably missing something but other than for the aesthetics of large mags wouldn’t it make sense to get the largest non-pinned mag available for your rifle? In this case it seems like 10 round mags.

If there a reason you’d want a PMAG 10 round that is pinned to 5?

I did wonder about the cross mags getting in the way shooting prone but I figured they’re probably pretty easy to clip and unclip as needed.

Get LAR15 magazines

10 rounds pmag need to be pinned to 5 because it isn’t a "pistol magazines". Our laws are that retarded...

Get some ASC LAR15 magazines and enjoy.

So it’s really that dumb? I can buy and use a 10 round mag for my rifle because it’s considered a “pistol” mag?

Amazing.

Yes our laws are that stupid. They are drafted up and written by “experts” who don’t have a PAL/ RPAL between any of them. So much for my 30 year career in the high school classroom. Stupidity is still everywhere. Some difference I made in the classroom... ha ha ha The joke’s on me.

I too, have a pile of 30/5 rounders from my AR days. I do want to take my RAR out coyote hunting but I don’t want to carry that tall PMag around with me, so Magpul 5/10 rounders it’s gonna have to be. All interesting times. That’s for sure.

Be strong, be safe out there.

Peace Be To Journey!

Yup

In one hand you have a LAR15 pistol mag with a 10 rounds capacity and in the other, you have a 5/10 pmag, with a neutered capacity because...

Our guns laws do nothing for public safety

And all these years I thought any centrefire rifle had to have a 5 round mag max. But if course they are too stupid to make laws that make any sense.

Not that limiting a bolt action mag makes much sense to begin with, but you know what I mean.

The 5 round restriction was always only for semi-autos (M1 Garand specifically excluded). Bolt action rifles don't have any magazine capacity restriction except where regional hunting restrictions limit the capacity.

Got my cross mags today. Work great, from what I can tell. Very cool little system they’ve got there. I loaded some snap caps and went through a few cycles and they seem to perform flawlessly.

The mag that came with the rifle is a Duramag LAR-15, so I ordered another of those as well. I’ll put these through their paces and see if I want more of one or the other or what.

Got my RAR 5.56mm AR mag and rifle today.

Duramag / Cproducts 5/10 Stainless steel, but black finish. Works well at the home range on the bench. Took a bit of practice inserting the magazine by “feel”. Spoiled by an AR magazine well. Ha ha ha All in time I guess.

Ordered a couple of polymer 5/10 PMags from TNA (board sponsor) to see how they work. I do know my 5/30 PMags work well already.

Life is good. Peace Be To Journey!

Cheers, Barney
