Hey guys, did a search and found some discussions on this gun in all it's incarnations...but a friend of mine is trying to source a mag. (or 2) for his late father's Cooey. According to him, the data stamp reads;

Cooey-model- 64 A- 22 cal L.R MFG. By Winchester Cobourg. Ont. Canada

I've seen the gun, it's well used..guessing it might be about 40 years old, but that's a "shot in the dark" (no pun intended) Any idea who I might contact about getting these used, or is Savage a good source? Would have never asked that question, but I read in a previous thread that might be a good idea.

Thanks for taking a moment to respond.

If the gun has the metal magwell and uses metal mags. savage does sell to public. If it is the square bakeolite mag, there are a few around used but no new ones. The 64A is already converted or supposed to be.

How would you know which one is right? The first time my friend saw the rifle, there was no mag with it. Guess we take the $20 gamble and buy the pot metal one...?

Thanks for the input so far guys, greatly appreciated.

If it is the plastic mag you might be in luck. Griz 358 (forum member here) just listed 3 plastic mags this week on another forum for the 64's that require them. As I said, he had 3 of them at $45.00 each. Maybe he still has one left. If you require a metal mag then just do as already suggested.

"...pot-metal mags..." No such thing. They're black anodized Al.
The 64, 64A, 64B plus the Savage 62 and 954 all take the same mag. Epp's wants $20 for one. "WILL NOT FIT THE OLD MODEL 64 THAT USE PLASTIC MAGAZINES"
"CONVERSION KIT (PART #WGP-CCONV // RETAIL $42.99)"
Never seen a Cooey 64 with plastic mags. Mine is over 30 years old and came with 2 steel mags.

My Cooey 64 has a square bakeolite mag and apparently they were made during the early 60s first 2 years of manufacture. Pics available via Email.

I have never seen steel model 64 mags.

All models of the metal mag Cooey- Winchester- Lakefield/Mossberg and Savage 64s use the same mags. None are steel but early mags were "potmetal" and later apparently ( so stated) aluminum metal or a mixture like Al. I have had several 64s that were metal mags already...quite possibly the trouble with the steel lipped "plastic" mags led to a shift to the magwell and mag.
