I was just wondering if you port a rifle does it loose a little velocity on the bullet leaving the barrel. Just thinking that since you are bleeding off some of the gas the exact same rifle not ported would shoot a little flatter. A friend of mine had his custom done its just a little slit in the end of the barrel is this how its normally done?

Thanks

Not being an expert by any means on this subject, but I would think that you would lose some velocity. Any loss would be negligible and probably only measured by a chronograph or slight change in point of impact versus the previously non-ported barrel.

In my opinion, the only thing being bled with magnaporting is your wallet.....there is no free lunch, it may redirect recoil at the expense of much more noise and blast. Invest in the best recoil pad you can get and don't worry about vel. loss or trajectory as most of this is for home study and has little application in the field when the sh%t hits the fan.

"...just a little slit..." Properly done, by Magnaport, the holes are not very big. About 1/8" wide, last I saw them. However, they are EDM'd to an exact size, shape and angle based on the cartridge. If there's any velocity loss, it'll be minimal and not worth worrying about.

I've chrono'ed two rifles and three handguns that have been magnported, both before and after, and the velocity loss was no more then then you would have in normal shot to shot variation. As to the noise, I don't find magnaporting very loud. Muzzle brakes are quite loud, some more then others, but the two slits (or four on some guns) don't seem to add that much noise. Maybe I'm just deafer then I thought. - dan

magnaporting will not reduce your overall velocity worth talking about. Change your primer and see a bigger change.

The magnaport is also not as effective as a true brake at reducing recoil. About all it does it help keep the barrel down. It is quieter but is also an indication of how much less work it can do.

If I want a recoil reducing device, I will put up with the noise. If noise is an issue, I will not accept any muzzle device.

your mileage may vary.

i got my semi custom 3006 magna ported in september. i have not varified the claims with a chrony, but the guy that did it says there is no loss of velocity with the standard 4 ports. he ports bigger magnums with 6 ports and says there will be a 2% loss.

after porting i can still shoot .4 moa, it didn't affect accuracy. it reduced recoil to about 270. it kicked like a 300 before.

there was NO increased noise or muzzle blast.

it wasn't too expensive $125.

if you really want alot of recoil reduction go with a muzzle break, but get a well experienced smith to do it. they can really screw up accuracy if not done correct. if you want a little reduction with no extra noise go ported.

I had Magna Ported guns before and find it an excellent way to reduce recoil and especially muzzle jump, a big plus is that it does not add any length to the gun and is quite pleasing to the eye, it can also be used with sights on the barrel. As others have stated I did not notice any change in velocity or accuracy.

This may sound a little weird but i dont have any problem with the recoil. I find though in my sitting in my ground blind using a rest (blind window) the muzzle jump was hard to controll because i couldnt really hold down on the rifle because the rest window wasnt stong enough. I am going to remedy this with a better rest but i thought of maybe magna porting to help with barrel lift. Standing or resting on a solid log no problem.

I have cleaned and inspected several Magna-Ported barrels from many hunters. The thing they all had in common was damage inside the barrel close to the ports from dust and debris gathering in the ports and entering the barrel. All of them are a pain in the ass to clean. You need pressurized air and a good effort to get the ports clean so they don't "bleed" back into the barrel later. Eventually accuracy will suffer. Some quicker than others depending on how diligent the owner is in cleaning and keeping it clean.

By the time the bullet gets to the ports, it's already going as fast as it's ever going to go, so no, I don't think you'd see ANY effect on velocity.
