Howdy folks.

Just bought myself a magnetic bore sight. The instructions were very simple.
Place the bore sight on the end of the barrel (in line with scope if you are using a scope).

I was thinking to myself: Self, how can this work? Won't the placement of the bore sight have to be measured? How do I know where to put it? If the bore sight is moved slightly up or down, the target grid in the bore sight will also move up or down.

To my surprise it didn't have any effect where the bore sight was placed (within reason!) If it was still in view of scope, it didn't seem to have an affect if it was moved slightly to the right or left. Up or down.

Can someone explain the science behind this?

On a side note - looks like my mosin nagant, using a bore sight, will be shooting left and high.

I guess that means file and elevation adjustment.

They are great for getting you on paper, I usually use it for scopes only. When I am setting mine up, I typically measure out 10 yards. Draw a circle on a piece of paper with a another dot measured about 3/4 inch above the circle. I place the laser dot in the center of the circle and adjust the crosshairs onto the dot above the circle. It's not going to get you absolute zero, but it will get you on the paper at 100yds. You will have to manually fine tune it yourself once you got the crosshairs lined up. It also depends on how high the sights/scope are over the bore and which type of firearm caliber you are using.

I've been using a SL100 by Sitelite with all my scoped firearms with great success.

I've never tried it with iron sites so you may need to figure that one out yourself.
