This has probably been asked before, but I can't find anything with the search function. Just wondering if the mag pouches that have the magnet on the outside are legal in Standard Division in IPSC?

I know the rules says mag pouches must be mounted a maximum of 50 mm. from your body,... and it would be. But, the mag would be held more than 50 mm. when attached to the outside of the mag pouch.

I want to be sure I'm legal before I plunk down my money for one. If the answer is as I expect, who sells them in Canada? I have the CR Speed Versa pouches.

the rules do not say that mag pouches have to be mounted a maximum of 50 mm from your body. the rules say that the gun and Magazines must not be more then 50 mm from the body. as for the magnet's for as long as you start the stage with the mags 50 mm or less form your body or in other locations if specified in the stage briefing then you are OK. after the start beep it becomes free style. however this does not mean that you Can have a magnet in front of your hip bone as that would be allied equipment in the wrong place.

Ok, so I've been thinking, (a bad start:eek:). You say after the beep it's freestyle, but you can't have it in front of the hip bone because it would be allied equipment in the wrong place. Understood.

But placing the magazine on the magnet which is mounted on the outside of the mag pouch would hold it more than 50 mm. from the body. Would this also be considered in the wrong place?

I'm not disagreeing with you, just looking for an explanation to give to any RO who doesn't agree with the placement of my magnet.

This is what magnetic ones look like (there is no pouch, just a magnet):

Oh, and keep your credit/debit cards away, those are very strong :D

Walter is correct. If you want to read a discussion about it go to IPSC global village site and do a search.

There was a recent change/clarification to this , and the "on the table starts".. I don't recall the exact outcome, but you can find it on IPSC GV.

No, once you go free style you Can put stuff anywhere. we have all seen people put a mag in their mouth. that does not move the Standard and Production guys to open for dealing this. the difference is that when you use the magnetics on your pouches, you are not using them to normally carry your mags so now they are just part of your pouch, however when you put them either by them self or on a magazine holder in front of your hip bone then they are "allied equipment" even if you are not using them except for a "pickup" stage.

maybe a simpler way to explain it is they are just decorations on the outside of your mag pouch.

This is from IPSC Global Village.
Mr Vince Pinto anwser a question:

At the start signal, I grab several magazines and stick them to the magnets on the outside of my mag pouches. At this point in time they are more than 50 mm from my torso when measured according to the rules. I load up my gun and proceed through the stage, reloading several times from the magazines on the magnets. Am I still in Standard Division after this stage?

Yes. As I explained earlier, your allied equipment must be behind the hip bone before the Start Signal. Now obviously if it's a table start, your mags are placed on a table but, after the Start Signal, you can grab and place your mags anywhere you like on your person.

This has been an accepted "practical" practice for as long as I can remember. I just want to formalise it in the rules from 1 January, so that everyone knows the rule.

Also remember the historical reasons behind the 50mm and "behind the hip bone" rules, which are both to do with concealability. However with a table start, that's not an issue, and practicality dictates that after the Start Signal, you grab what you need and start shooting.

5.2.4 Spare ammunition, magazines and speed loading devices should be carried in retention devices specifically designed for that purpose, to reduce the risk of loss during a course of fire. If a COF requires that spare magazines or speed loading devices be placed on a table or any other place while the competitor awaits the Start Signal, after retrieval, the competitor may carry and/or place those items anywhere on their person, and this will not be treated as a contravention of Divisional rules which otherwise restrict placement of such items (see Appendices D1-D5).

I think what he's asking is that after the COF starts, can he take his mags from the pouches that they're in, and stick them to magnets, affixed to the outside of the forementioned pouches, and still stay in Prod?

Why stop there though? I mean, why not run around the stage, and pre-position mags at all your shooting positions. Think of the time you'd save on mag changes now that you're not fumbling around with your belt!

;)

First off the rules state that you must start with all of your equipment on your belt unless otherwise specified in the stage description. second off it is not faster to pull mags off of tables etc to do a reload.

after the start button if you really want to pull mags out of your pouches and put them on your magnets go ahead.
