MagnetoSpeed Sporter, how are they holding up?

I bought one a couple months ago on sale
Works great on my 308, 260, 22-250
Had to change the sensitivity to use it on my 22lr
So far I’m happy

Only down side I see is I have trouble getting it snug enough that it won’t slide forward with recoil.
So every 5 shots I slide it back

I’ve got pretty limited usage on mine but so far I’m happy. I bought it off EE from an upstanding member. Unfortunately when I received it there was an issue with the box and it wouldn’t work. I contacted Magnetospeed and they sent a whole new unit. It seems like it was a common problem with the sporters.

It definitely throws your groups off. Basically load development and velocity check has to be a separate task.

How does this work in practice? You sight in your gun with this thing hanging on your barrel but it's taken off when hunting. How do you keep the harmonics of the barrel from changing? This is usually not discussed so it must not be a problem. What is the scoop here?

Why are you sighting in with it on the barrel?

Regarding it sliding forward. Put the spacer you are not using on top of the barrel and run the strap over it. Problem solved.

It’s not a bad rig, just need to stap it down tight
They can be had for $250, all in.

Had mine for a few years now...works good. I don't use it while developing a load as it shoots to a different POI with it on.

Wouldn't want to be without one once you use it. :)

You want to know speed or you want to be sighted in - don't think you can do both at same time with this one. So, like I used to use our Shooting Chrony - set up for doing load testing into a bank. Separately, later, sighted in preferred load at desired range - did not involve the Chrony at all. Although got fussy a couple times and tried to do both at same time - get both speed and group size - takes considerable fussing to get Chrony lined up for that. No way I know to do that with the Magnetospeed

Moved from a crony to a Magnetospeed several years ago and never regretted it. I even use it on lever actions by puting it upside down on top of the barrels, sure I can't sight it but I'm only measuring a few rounds for velocity, not going for acuracy at that point.

It can be used for other stuff as well.
Compare your speed to book values, etc.
I once used mine to test the speed of a .308 barrel, from a savage 10 TR.
Start cutting an inch off, per 5 rd group. From 24 down to 19.

It was a fun day …Lol

I blew the Bayo off my Win 94.
It was then I realized it was tapered.. ha ha

So the trick is to turn it upside down huh.
Thanks

Some may not understand - take five rounds - drive up the back road a ways - rip off five into ditch bank to ensure feed and function is there - home 10 minutes after you left. Was not at all about "sighting in" - no scope - barrel did not even have sights, yet.

My bayo just died after about 4 years of use. There's a short in the cable.

Went with me to the range a lot, as well as a couple dozen matches.

Really liked it and it was great for getting your velocity before a match. Very convenient, easy to use, and compact.

That being said, I'm probably going Labradar next, as I want to be able to gather velocity data at the same time I'm shooting groups.

So , you had the V3? Can’t you just buy a new bayo?

I’d give ya $100 for the rest of the parts, if it’s the V3.. 😁

I’m not saying you should, just wondering why not.
I’d rather the Lab to, if it wasn’t so pricy.

I always find my load first, then test for speed, so it’s not to much of a bother.

No, I have the Magnetospeed Sporter. On mine, the cable is integral to the bayo. I wish I could just change it out.

I could buy a new bayo, but I'm seeing if NK will fix it first. That money might be better spent on the Labradar though. If you do a lot of load dev, it will pay for itself.

I have a buddy with a V1 that's still going strong.

I have the V1 , less the bayo.

Magneto lists the Sporter Bayo for $100 cad ,it also says the Sporter bayo works with the V1, which is what I need.

There you go .... use it to confirm speeds ....
