magnum barrel on a LR 10/22 ?

there are a select few who have done this.

it's far more involved than simply swapping barrels. you need to move the trigger group back in the reciever to make room for the magnum magazine, hence you also need to modify the inletting in the stock. spring rates also need to be addressed for this conversion to function anywhere near properly.

my biggest problem with doing it is as follows. 10/22s use an aluminum reciever, where as the 10/22M uses a steel reciever. my strong opinion is that there was a very distinct reason that ruger saw fit to use steel for the magnum round, but aluminum was sufficient for the LR round.

if you are interested (i wouldn't sugget it either!), look up rimfire central, there was a writeup done by one of the members there.

PS: i really hate refering people elsewhere, but it's nessecery sometimes!

The reason the 22mag uses a heavy bolt assembly is due to the higher pressure from the mag. The heavier bolt assembly is made from different metals to make it heavier than the 22. I have shot 22lr from mine 22 mag and the cases come out destroyed but the accuracy is not bad from thew 20-30 yards that I tried it at. The 22lr case is smaller in diameter and the lead is also smaller than the 22mag and this is why the case ruptures and it is not as accurate as the 22lr chamber. 22lr is .223 cal and the 22 mag is .224.

At one point there were a couple good Old boys on the Roderus Custom Gun forum that were doing Magnum conversions of the standard 10-22.

For the amount of work, as well as all the other reasons given, and the one-way nature of the modifications required, it really didn't amount to more than a way to spend time and money on something worth less than the parts that had to be put into it or ruined.

Cheers
