Can any of you gunsmiths give me a couple of answers. Would all the large magnums have the same bolt face, what I am looking at is a 338 lapua compared to any of the Chey tac cartridges. I know they have different parent cases just wonder if the bolt could work for both. Also is there any different lathe work required for different style extractors. If I had a sako style and wanted to switch to a m-16 style. Thanks

As far as I know the Lapua has a rim diameter 0.588 inches, the Cheytac a rim diameter of .640 inches, both of which are way larger than the Standard Magnum of .535 inches.

This took about 30 seconds using google...

Why go to all that trouble when you can just post a new thread and up your post count? I'm noticing this a lot lately.

What action are you planning on modifying? Bolt faces can often be opened for a larger cartridge. But altering a Sako style extractor to a M-16 type could be problematic.

I have a lawton 8000 which is chambered for a 338 Allan Mag. I bought a new bolt for it that I was told was made for a 338 lapua but I think it is the correct size for my 338 AM as the bolt face is only 1 thousand smaller than my old one. That is why I am asking if it could be used for both cartridges. When I say change the style of extracter I mean one bolt has the sako style and the other has the m-16. And want to know if there are any changes to the action or barrel to do this change. I know that if the bolt is changed the head space has to be redone.

You are correct it did turn out to be a Cheytac bolt face as I thought. After I measured it I got to thinking if it was possible for this bolt face to be used for both cartridges. But after getting both of the measurements I see that is not possible.
