...Don't mean any disrespect to Lapua, but my smith had the first of these babies built before most of us ever heard of a .338 Lapua. Actually, if you go back into some of the very old shooting magazines, you can find articles on the .338/8mm(which he told me today is what he based this cartridge on) He was sitting in the woods with his 8mm Mag waiting for a Swamp Donkey to come out of the Swamp and he was thinking about the 338/8mm. He wanted one, but a different one, so his brain went click and the shoulder was changed to 33 degrees, 8 minutes, the taper was taken out of the body (.338
) and the 8.6 x 72mm SDM was concieved. He just shakes his head everytime I go in to see him with my findings. He says that he's sure I have tried more powders and shot more rounds thru mine, then all the others shooters combined that he's built them for. And when ever someone comes in with a load question, he just tells them to "Call Bill" he knows more about loads than I ever will.
..........But that I dought.........
...There are a couple other smiths chambering this cartridge into rifles for shooter out here, but their remears aren't quite the same, because when they ordered them, the SDM remear was still proprietary. I don't know if they shoot as well or achieve the same velocities, but I saw one being shot awhile ago, and it's velocities were right up there with mine. And I have not talked to anyone who has not been impressed with their investment with the cartridge. Everyone seems to be doing the
