Magnum primer's in a LR case

I start from scratch if ANY of the component has changed.

Err on the side of caution for me.

I'm kind of fond of my fingers and eyesight.:D

Mike, you got away from what I said in my posting.
Here it is.

How do you account for the fact that when you look up loads on the Hodgdon site on the computer, there is no mention of whether to use a standard, or a magnum primer?

Did I not plainly state, "--loadings on the computer?"

The modern loading manuals are all written, to the very best they can, to protect themselves from law suits.
Look at any of the loading charts from say, the 1960s. See if you can see any mention of primer used, or what brand or type of bullet used, just the weight of the bullet, or any mention of what brand of case!
And we all ended up with the usual number of digits intact, proper eyesight, etc.

I'll answer with some Pressure Trace Data I've taken over the last month:

190 SMK
41.8 gr. Varget
Lapua Brass
2.775" COAL

BR2: 2574 fps. (53809 psi)
210M: 2582 fps. (55979 psi)
WLR: 2574 fps. (54561 psi)
9 1/2M: 2595 fps. (54249 psi)
CCI 250: 2637 fps. (55726 psi)
WLRM: 2642 fps. (59221 psi)

Some brands are more potent than others. Going from a BR2 to a WLRM will get you in a lot of trouble. ALWAYS work up your loads if you change a component. Even with the ability to measure pressure, I would never just swap a component without first seeing where the pressure is at the starting load.
Thank you. I was hoping that someone with access to a pressure setup would speak up. If a new handloader starts reading that primers don't matter for pressure, it could have disastrous results; especially seeing as a lot of them don't seem to want to pick up and read a good reloading manual before starting.
With regards, Mike

I was just going through Hornady and a Lyman book. Change the primer start low.

Hornady has it published with a test same /same only change primer. What a velocity and pressure spread. New primer start low it's your face.

If you use the e-mail feature of the Hodgdon web site the e-mail message that you receive with loading details for the cartridge that you specify will include the primer type, case type and trim length information.

Regards,

Chizzy

Should have checked back to see all the advice about starting from scratch . Just tried 57grn RL22 fed mag primer & 140 gameking OAL 3.28 . Primer flattend & the bolt was a little sticky . Gonna start at minimum from now on & work my way up .
