hi guys, just about to try reloading for the first time. I forget what my gunsmith was saying about how much to reduce the load by with magnum primers.

loading 30-06 with CCI magnum primers and using my Speer manual for 180 grainers
I have 4198 4895.

will load with 4895 on this batch, max load 47 min load 43 grs

I think he said bump it down %20 just wanna double check with some CGN'ers

thanks for your help

20%? Don't do that

2% maybe

I've found minimal differences between standard and magnum primers on the doppler radar. Even in 7mm mag in temps of -15c

He probably mentioned that H4895 can safely be dropped down 20%, but don't do it, use start data, or buy a 30-30 as that's where the velocity will be with 20% reduction.

OP, is your rifle new??? Has it been fired with factory ammo???

If it has, there really isn't any reason, IMHO, that you should be starting with minimum loads.

If you load to the mid reloading manual specs, including over all length, the mid table load is a very good place to start.

If you are not tolerant of recoil, then go to the starting load or slightly less with 4895, which just happens to be a very forgiving powder

If you insist on using a "REDUCED" load, imr4198 would be better, again IMHO, mostly because it's bulkier than imr4895 and takes up a bit more space, making for safer ignition.

The Speer Manual actually lists a "reduced load" for this powder, with the 180 grain bullets they produce.

25 to 30 grains of IMR4198 under 180 grain bullets.
