I have reloaded .243 Win. for quite a few years but have just had a new experience, incomplete powder burning. A couple of rounds fizzled but the bullet went downrange. I was left with unburned powder in the bore. One of my reloading sources suggests magnum primers for all loads in the .243. Anyone out there with thoughts on this ? I am presently using RL15 and RL19.

Unburned powder MAY NOT be a primer issue. Your cases may have had moisture in them.. Worse yet if you use oil for case lubing. Some may have found it's way into the case. I take care of misfired ammo at our range and occasionally I see some with "wet" powder and it turns out to be oil contamination. If you have any of that batch of ammo left you may want to pull the bullets and check the remaining powder.

"...reloading sources suggests magnum primers for all loads in the .243..." That's daft. Been loading .243 for 30 some years with regular primers. In any case, magnum primers are about the powder used, not the cartridge.
"...turns out to be..." Or powder that did get wet then dried out.

It does sound like a bad primer issue, I had one batch of Wolf primers that misfired or hangfired 80% of the time. When I switched to a new lot the problem went away. If you have some primers of a different lot or different brand you could try those and see if the problem disappears.

Powder problem, the primer did it's job.
