Have any of you guys put a Magpul fore end on a 12.5 inch gun? I'm concerned the fore end will stick out past the end of the barrel as the pictures seem to show the barrel nut recessed a bit in the fore end. I have an older 870 Wingmaster that I run with a 12.5" barrel I bought from Can-Am. I'm thinking of throwing on a polymer stock set and I like the look of the Magpul stuff. Think there would be any issues?

This picture shows what I'm concerned about:

It will be fine. It will get blacker but that is about it.

The main problem is that you will have an ugly gun with that furniture on it ;)

Yeah I was wondering about that too, but in the tactical shotty's thread there are a bunch on 12.5"'s so I assumed, it would just get filthy.

I put the magpul on my 12.5 had to put a smiley face end cap to replace the sling so it would fit. It is so much fun to shoot, and yes the the forend gets a little dirty when you shoot it.

Have you run a sling with it?... any issues of the slide inadvertently racking and opening the chamber when hanging off the body?

It's impossible to rack an 870 without squeezing the trigger or hitting the action bar lever regardless of sling set up. Assuming the shotgun is functioning properly.

I like the fore end (and the ability to add accessories) but I think I will pick up a kicklite recoil reducing stock as well.

Run your pump all the way forward now try and pull it back without the trigger being pulled or action release pressed.
I see what your saying..... the action is engaged (or cocked) preventing the slide from coming forward.....
Where I am going is....I don't really like walking around with a round in the chamber, and in a high stress situation having to depress the trigger and fire an empty chamber to rack a round doesn't really fly for me..... Thus having a sling point on the slide doesn't work in my world.

I agree that a sling attachment point is not ideal on the pump.

If you feel the need to carry a gun, it should have a round chambered.

So do you carry it with a round chambered but the action not all the way closed? I can see the action being jostled open and losing a round without even realizing it. You can also get a pretty miserable stoppage to clear depending how far back the fore end travels and then comes forward. Then comes time to close the action and the chamber is empty or worse you have a stoppage. That would create an even more stressful situation than attempting to rack the action to chamber a round or just removing the safety. I understand that you don't trust the safety for long duration carry. I would suggest training to quickly chamber a round by hitting the action bar lever. Squeezing the trigger to work the action is bad muscle memory.

Start your thought process over, remembering that the 'slide release' is what you use to open the action on a pump, not the trigger.

Pulling the trigger will also open it, but that isn't what you would do when proving a pump gun safe, and using the trigger to open it under stress with a loaded mag tube is a disaster waiting to happen.

Or I could roll with a standard forward sling point.... Have my trigger finger in the safe position above the guard against the receiver, rack a round, depress the safety and then place my finger inside the guard and fire. Instead of awkwardly extending my finger forward to release the slide, then rack, then safety... Then fire.
Unfortunately that particular MOE for end extends too far forward for a conventional forward side sling plate.
