I just got my Magpul magazines from Questar. Apart from great looks and quality I have one uncertainty that you might help to clear up for me. Mag don't falls when release button is pressed, I have to pull it down to remove it. Is that normal or not?

TIA

And here is the pic to make this thread more exciting :)

Often the pins rub the inside of the magwell. You can file the head of the pin flatter, then they should drop free.

^this.

Just be sure to not take too much off or the rivet will fall out and you'll be an instant terrorist.

Tight magwell?

The latest batches of Pmags from Questar are riveted with a countersunk rivet that sits flatter than the rib that runs up the back of the mag. It does not need filing like the older ones, and in fact can't really be filed anyway.

Unless all of your examples have been riveted badly, which is unlikely, your problem is most likely a tight magwell. It may be at the tight end of the specs, or being an Armalite, may be slightly under spec.

Just for reference, I have tried several dozen of the new Pmags in almost a dozen different magwells from different manufacturers. Some brands are a little tighter, but all dropped free. I have also only had to re-rivet one mag which which was done badly, and one which had a standard rivet, out of a very large batch.

Unless you want to file down the mag bodies or the inside of your magwell, it is something you will just have to live with if you want to use Pmags.

Regards.

Thank you Mark for detailed explanation! I think that I have a case of tight magwell. It's kind of odd that Magpul produces magazines without taking on to the account millspec Armalite Ar's. I've decided to live with it, but I can't imagine using those mags on the field without ability to drop them instantly.

I found what could be your answer: Straight from Drake Clark @ Magpul:

"There are two small rectangle tabs on the backside of the PMAG body about 2.5" down from the back top. These are there to take up slack in out of spec lowers. If your lower is too tight, those two rectangles can be sanded down (constantly checking for fit)."

Alternatively, the Emag is designed to fit NATO spec magwells, and doesn't have the ribs on the upper portion, so this may be an option for you, although they are a little more expensive here in Canada.

You could also try "blacking" one of your Pmags and fitting it into the magwell to see where it is rubbing. Then either file some of the material off each mag, or for a more permanent solution, consider filing the magwell itself.

Not too much, just enough to allow the mags to drop free. They will eventually cause some wear in those areas in any event with continual insertion and removal. This will mean that any Pmag, or other mag, will fit, but some people may balk at filing their lower.

Nice Rifle

Nice rifle, by the way.

Just a couple of things:

The A2 Flashhider does not look like it is timed correctly, but that may just be the photo angle.

Check that the Receiver End Plate is properly staked. I can not see the staking from the photo.

Check that the Gas Key is properly staked. I had one the other day from Armalite that I had to restake.

Regards.
