Magpul SGA comments

Also has anyone had experience with a Mesa LEO w/ the enidine buffer for comparison to the SGA?

I have both. Had the Mesa with the buffer first. Awesome at absorbing the recoil: Probably could shoot it all day in a t-shirt. Think sound a fury with very little recoil. This particular 870p has gone kind of overboard with tac goodies in my opinion but I can't bring myself to de-build it so I got a second one to stay more streamlined. As a side note I had a couple newbs who found the recoil of an SBL shooting factory 405 grain ammo easier to shoot than the endine-equiped 870 because "it didn't move around as much." Food for thought.

While the SGA looks a little ungainly at first, it is super-handy in person. Unlike the true pistol grip, it doesn't hang up on things when not in your hands. Basically it does everything one needs in a short LoP stock without any downside.

Does the stock's handgrip allow a 'thumb-over' grip with a 12.5" LOP, unlike the hogue short LOP?

For me the cheek weld on the SGA is higher so no problem. That said, I can easily reach my face forward to where it would be a problem. Having watered my eyes on a shortened wood stock I am much less inclined to do it again and the SGA works for me where a short normal stock would not.

One advantage the 870 has is the rubber insert cover for access to the SGA stock bolt. Much better design.
For the same access point on the Mossberg they use a plastic snap in cover with a small plastic tab. Like a TV remote uses! Well all know what happens to those after multiple removals...terrible, nonsensical design flaw.
One of mine actually arrived with that exact tab already broken off in the package. Took months for the Dealer to make right.

I've tried the short lop Hogue, the Mesa Urbino, and the Magpul SGA on my 8.5" 870 and I think the SGA is a good compromise of all 3.

I prefer pistol grip stocks on my guns but I wasn't completely satisfied with the Mesa and my front sight.
I liked the short lop with the Hogue but if I wasn't careful with the grip I found it easy to punch myself in the nose under recoil
I think the SGA has enough of a grip angle that it's comfy to use, and the angle also keeps me from punching myself. lol

So far I'm happy with my SGA.

I'm not crazy about the butt stock but I did get the handguard. I like the feel and look but I wish they used a more grippy texture on it. I'm thinking I might have to add some skateboard tape to it.

I bought my FDE SGA for my 870 from CTC Supplies.

I had the Knoxx on there but had trouble getting a good cheek welt and sight picture with the standard sights.

I like the ergonomics of the SGA and it is comfortable to shoot. The quality is obviously there being MagPul. It does look strange but functions quite well so who cares.

I have the Mesa LEO with the buffer. Bought from Brownells years ago before the Canadian dollar plumetted. It is is on an 870 Express Tactical with ghost ring sights. Overall I LOVE the stock and would reccomend it. Eats up a ton of the recoil. Slugs feel like bird shot.

However on my bush gun (870 shorty) I would not want it as IMO the pistol grip would/could get caught on stuff when slung, trying to find a compact case/scabbard for it troublesome, and if I need to shoot in a threat situation, who cares about recoil? (assuming to can handle it and stay on target). Right now the busg gun ahs the factory Rem stock. I don't really like it. I too am considering buying the Magpul SGA and leaving the Mesa LEO on my bigger 870. I still keep this gun in the cabin and take it in the truck sometimes. I believe the tube holds 7 and I have a Mesa 6 shell side saddle too - bring it!!

A cheek welt is something you want to avoid!

How do you like the sling mounted like that? That's what I want to do with mine when my 14" barrel, 1-shot extension, and sling mount come in from S&J.

Seems ok, though i haven't had it out in the field yet. Im heading to the bush for the rest of the week tomorrow and plan on taking it with me so hopefully it will work well. I will do a follow up when i get back sunday.

Magpul makes a two-sided QR for the stock as well if that saddle starts to dig into your back after a few miles. Personally, being able to switch things up helps over distance.

X2, I've cycled through alot of stocks for the 870, and this one is a winner by far, I know it looks "goofy" but it works.
The "price point" is bang on. It's G2G.

The grip is very straight... I think that's what makes it look weird. Still, as strange looking as it is I find mine comfy too and love the adjust-ability.

Been handling both my 590 and 870 Magpul SGA guns alot lately and the two grips are quite different from each other. The 590 is definitely more comfortable.
