mags for ipda & ipsc

1 in the gun and 5 on the belt.

i'd have one or two extra as stripper mags or backup.

i usually have 8-10 mags just in case my mag falls apart or lose a baseplate.

Consider a 32 round stage with the following shooting positions:

Position 1) 6 rounds
Position 2) 6 rounds
Position 3) 6 rounds
Position 4) 6 rounds
Position 5) 8 rounds

To avoid a standing reload at any of these positions, you would need to have one mag in your gun and four on your belt. I like to go with five on my belt (and one in the gun) in case I have a malfunction.

10 or 12 is good. When you're shooting outdoors in the spring or fall and drop 1 or 2 into the muddy waters, it's much easier to toss 'em into a baggie and grab a couple fresh ones.

You could be the guy cleaning his mags while the rest of your squad is patching & setting steel...;)

From my own experience - 5 mags is the bare minimum for IPSC production class: four on the belt and one in your back pocket for the initial load. As others have said, if you have 8-10 you can afford to trade off a dirty mag or three.
