hey guys, i have two m1 carbine mags that are pinned to 3 rounds only

i was wondering if i am allowed to drill out the current rivet and pin it to 5 rounds?
or do i have to take it to a gunsmith?

Do it the other way around. You should pin to 5 before removing the first rivet; even though it's just next to impossible to get it right on the first shot without loading five rounds first to get the proper measurement.

Maybe reference another mag that is aleady pinned to 5, if you have one.

ok thanks, i just wanted to make sure that im not "modifying" the mags.

i hope i get the hole right exactly at 5 rounds...

thanks again!

Yes you can re-pin it to the legal capacity no problem there is no need or requirement to have a gunsmith do it. Also I reccommend pinning it to 5.5 so that there is enough room to seat the mag on a closed bolt, but not enough room to let a 6th round in. It tends to make the mags more reliable with less chance of binding that 1st round.

Excellent point. I just purchased a few mags and found they were quite tight with 5 rounds which also made it difficult to seat unless the bolt was open.

I have pinned many mags to 5 which were 3 or 4 before, just take your time, who said you need a gunsmith for it? As the previous poster said, 5.5 is the way to go.

It's called a drill. Just disamble the mag before pining or removing the rivit that way its not a prohib when you do it. I would just pull the mag apart drill the new hole put a rivit in it then remove the wrong one.
