can I put any kind of mag into this Chinese SKS? Even if it is a pinned 30 rounder.

If you want to use magazines with your SKS you need to look for a SKS-D model, which refers to the detachable magazine capability.

Well they are cheap guns, so you could try to permanently attach the magazine to the gun so your rounds feed from strippers into the magazine like they do with both models, but then storage and transportation would be a PITA because of its odd wide profile. Search the SKS forum, I think something like that has been done.

The most reliable mags for the regular SKS are the ones it comes with.

the banana mags may look cool but they don't feed well from what I've heard even if you could fully load them.

Buying an SKS-D is a better bet.

Even then... anything that requires two hands and a foot to change magazine is not to be considered functional or safe by my standards

For those not familiar with this wonderful process hand number one is used to hold the bolt open (due to bolt design it won't allow mag to be released if closed unless you use a D model), hand number two to activate the mag release, and feet to actually remove the damn piece of cr*p from an otherwise functional gun

Use the the provided internal magazine or go with a D

or replace the reg bolt with a D-bolt then it has both the advantages, easy mag removal and also bolt stays open after the last round.

+2 in spades. :)

For me the "look cool function" fades pretty quick with an aftermarket mag that causes stovepipes, jams, and and other malfunctions.

Stick with the original duckbill mag it came with, or like others have said fork over the over the top asking prices for an SKS D.

Personally, I would only buy one tapco magazine, and never remove it. Just feed it like the normal internal magazine that it originally had. I mean changing magazines every 5 rounds would be a pain anyways.
